22RE Oil Pressure Sender

22RE Oil Pressure Sender
When I bought my 1986 4Runner (22RE) the PO had swapped in an SR5 gauge cluster and used an AutoZone oil pressure sender. The oil pressure gauge did not register any pressure. He put an auto trans cluster but from my eye it is wired correctly.
I have the dash apart and decided to test everything. The oil pressure receiver in the cluster specs out OK according to the FSM, 44.3 ohms. However, the oil pressure sender failed FSM test. It could not light up a 3.4W bulb.
No problem, I'll pick up a new oil sender. I picked up a new oil pressure sender, Intermotor PS186, made in Japan. I installed it with teflon tape only leaving the bottom 2 or 3 threads free. I still don't have any oil pressure register at the pressure gauge.
I check out the new sender. It cannot light a 3.4W bulb. Did I get two bum senders? I was cautious not to screw it in to far, it doesn't leak. Do these pressure senders need to be seated on something or just screwed in enough not to leak?

The fact I get a voltage with the ignition on indicates it is grounded.
You get a mechanical gauge and be done with it.

I was hoping for some insight on why these aftermarket senders don't work. My searches don't indicate that it is a routine problem. I find it odd that there were two bad out of the box from different mfgs. Could this indicate some other problem? I've ordered an OEM unit. I hope that solves it and will update with the results.

Different year gauges look sometimes for different signals I ran into this years ago and just went to all mechanical oil pressure gauges.
Your sending unit might have been boxed wrong that happens all to often
Did you have your meter on and watch if the resistance changes as the pressure changes .
The port your using has not been blocked with dirt ??
Your engine does have oil pressure ??
I hope your Toyota one works
You are using the sending unit for the gauge and not the light ??

All I know is the part number on the box is for a 1986 4Runner w/tach.

It would be odd for this to happen twice in a row

I I followed the test procedure set out in the FSM. A 3.4W bulb
The port your using has not been blocked with dirt ??
possible but doubtful, a dribble of oil did escape when I pulled the old one
Your engine does have oil pressure ??
if it doesn't, I've been living on borrowed time for 5000 miles. I should put a mechanical to test. I do see movement from the oil cap.

New Sankei oil pressure gauge arrived. Now if my free time would synch up the rain I could test it out. I sincerely hope this is it. I know there are two OEM oil pressure senders, the other being Yakazi. I have no information on cross compatibility. If this sender doesn't power the gauge, but tests out correct using the FSM procedure I'll start looking at the wiring. First test continuity from the sender to the gauge and if needed track from the sender harness back to the gauge. I think there is only two intermediary junctions. Is there an easy way to find where they are in the truck using the FSM or EWD?

Boooooooo, the new OEM Senkei oil pressure sender didn't work.
Although I'm pretty sure the oil is moving around, I'll check the pressure. Is it possible for that port to be clogged? I see a little oil dribble out when I pull a sender.
I do not have continuity in the wiring harness from the sender plug to the gauge. My reading of the EWD indicates it should, pretty much a wire straight from the sender to the gauge. I'm guessing this is the problem.
EDIT: The wiring is good.

The Senkei sender works sort of according to the FSM. It flashes, the bulb doesn't gets brighter with increasing RPM as the FSM says it should.
I rechecked the wiring and have continuity from the sender to the gauge cluster. I have 1 Ohm of resistance, but that may be my chain of alligator clips.
I went back and really did the FSM tests on the cluster gauge receivers in the two clusters I have. Test 1 with the ignition on, test the voltage at the oil post on the back of the cluster. It should be ~4.5V. I'm getting 12.4V on both of them. Bummer, I thought one of them worked. I hope the guy I bought the new cluster from is understanding in giving me a refund.

Well, a conclusion for this thread. I finally bought an OEM Yakazi oil pressure sender from the dealer. The Ebay seller sent me a new oil pressure/temp gauge. I installed the Yakazi oil pressure sender and tested its function using the FSM test. It performs as the FSM says it should. The bulb intensity increases with increased throttle. The Senkei oil pressure sender I bought from LCE caused the test bulb to blink. Increasing throttle caused faster blinking of the test bulb. I now how working factory oil pressure gauge.
Now, I didn't put the Senkei oil pressure sender to see if it works because I didn't want to toast my functioning oil pressure gauge. I would highly recommend getting the Yakazi oil pressure sender from the dealer if you are swapping in a SR5 gauge cluster made by Yakazi.
