Ok, so I have a build page already for my 1uz powered 4runner and rather then clutter that page up with the Hilux I figure I might as well do a build page for it as well.

I went to Australia at the end of 2015 and bought 2 Toyota Hilux ute's while over there visiting.

The white one is a 1990 LN106 SR5 model with 315K kilometers on the clock. It has a 3L NA Diesel, P/S, P/B, G52 5 speed transmission mated to the RF1A gear driven Tcase. 3" spring lift with Ranch 9000 shocks. ARB winch bumper, Warn M8000 winch, rear ARB bumper, IPF headlights with H4 60-80 bulbs, Safari snorkel, diff breathers extended, canopy, factory 4.30 gears with limited slip rear and 4.30 front with aussie locker.

Since I got it back home I installed the grill and parking lights from a US spec vehicle. I also installed the warn winch and also put on 33x10.5x15 BFG KM2's on Rock Crusher 15x8 wheels. I purchased a complete A/C system out of a wrecked Hilux while over then and shipped it back with this ute. I will install A/C into this rig as soon as I have time to put it in there.

Here soon I will bend up some metal for rock sliders and get an aux fuel tank installed, and then brush bars as well. I have also purchased an elocker and an IFS rear axle sitting at the shop. It will get cleaned up and an elocker with 4.88 gears will find its way inside. The limited slip will be then regeared and installed up front along with the wide axle kit I have for it as well. I also have a RHD IFS steering box and the first set of Zink plated high steer arms and the rest of the kit so I can go cross over steering on this rig too! I also am a dealer for Turbo Glide here in the States. I will get a turbo system setup on this ute here soon.

The next truck is a 1991 LN106 truck. I flew down to Tasmania and bought this ute as it was a very nice truck and was begging to be brought back to the USA.

Here is its run down.

3L diesel, G52 5 speed, A/C, P/S, P/B, 4.30 gears with limited slip in the rear. Aluminum front bumper, Kenwood stereo and CD changer, bed liner, and 31x10.5x15 BFG All terrain tires. It was a grandpa truck and it shows with this truck. It has 370K kilometers on it.

This ute is for sale, so if anyone is interested your welcome to pm me. If it doesn't sell it will just be my daily driver.

Couple of poser shots from the other day. I got to show a 5th grade class an aussie vehicle!!! very fun looking at there faces seeing the steering wheel on the wrong side of the vehicle..

 

I have sold the Red Hilux tonight. Bitter sweet, but it is going to a really good guy who deserves to have it.

 

Went out for a trail ride today. We headed up Skyline Rd to Ollalie Lake in the Cascade Mountains. It was a little cloudy but we had a great time!!!

 

Definitely time for a turbo setup, high pinion front diff, 4.88's front and rear, wide axle kit up front and IFS axle out back....

If anyone has a JDM R151 bell housing please PM me. I have a US spec R151 with bell and I need the JDM version so the starter is in the correct location. I am willing to swap or buy

Update:

The last owner busted a bolt on the PS pump and it wouldn't stay tight on the belt. I decided to inspect and figure out why. Well they snapped a bolt and silicone the head back into place. So I pulled the unit out. To do this the radiator needed to be removed. Upon removing the radiator I found the 3 of the 4 welds holding the mounting flanges to the radiator had broke. So I am building a new radiator to replace the old brass copper unit. Now its going to be aluminum just like the 1uz 4runners. This new radiator is going to be able to keep up with the cooling needs that a turbo will induce.

Making progress. I should have the radiator buttoned up later this next week.

 

Those are some awesome trucks! how is the power with the 3.0 na? I had a 2.4 turbo 2lt truck and it was quite a bit slower than my other truck with a 22re. Will that truck hold 70 mph on the highway? have you driven enough to get an idea of fuel economy?

 

The power is lacking for top end, but the torque is awesome. It is definitely slower then a 22re, but its not designed as a racer engine, its a mountain goat. I like not having to hold the throttle down off road. It just idles up and over stuff. It is happy to hold 75 on the freeway, but not much more if any then that speed. It sings at about 60-65 mph. I usually just hold the slow lane and pass in the middle when on I5. I don't ever see the fast lane.

I average 450 kilometers to the tank which translates to 280 miles roughly on about 10 to 12 gallons of diesel depending on highway vs town This translates to 24 to 28 mpg for the truck. Truly amazing for a solid axle rig. I am expecting that once a turbo I am expecting about a 10% increase in mileage ( after the break-in period of me driving to hear the turbo) . I am looking at adding a 20 gallon aux tank. I am hoping to extend to 1000 mile range.

 

Sounds like the performance is very nice as is! But it will be even cooler when it has the turbo. I love this truck already but everything you mention to add or change all sound like good improvements. 1000 mile range would be sweet. In the beginning you mention an e-locker, I have one in my truck and I am very happy with it. Good luck with your truck, I am interested to see your progress!

 

Thanks for the compliments. I have thought about the elocker more and actually sold the unit I had in the shop. I have decided to use the limited slip it has in the rear and install a non elocked high pinion front diff with a limited slip as well. This will provide added traction for off road but have no electrical connections which this truck doesn't have already. There is no ECU in this truck as its all mechanical and I want to keep it that way. I figured I wouldn't off road it like the Zrunner and elockers was overkill.

 

JDM bell housing has been found. I am going to swap the G54 transmission out for the R151 here soon. I also now carry custom built flat belly skid plates for this rig. I should have it all sorted and installed in the next few months for those who want pictures.
