prospective buyer with questions

All,

What common problems should I look for (to avoid) when buying a 1996 or 2002 4Runner with a V6? Those are the years I am considering.

My 95 4runner has a transmission that is shot. Mechanic says strange vibrations have cracked the entire housing surround. He says it's not worth rebuilding, and a used tranny with labor will cost $1,600. So, I considered purchasing a newer 4Runner instead. I'd like to get something with airbags and more horsepower. FJ's are still too expensive.

I am going to look at a 96 4Runner and an 02 4Runner this weekend. Any pointers will be helpful. They have 180,000-220,000 miles on them.

I'm hoping I can salvage and reuse some parts from my customized 95 4Runner (skid plate, Subaru compass pack, bull bar with KC highlighters, Hayden tranny cooler, reverse lights, Tuffy 6.5 inch center locking console).

Have you seen these strange cracks ??

I would guess the transmission fluid is just pouring out

Lots of hardcore off road no doubt jumps and rock bouncing

I would say take your mechanic along to look at any vehicles you might deem worthy !!

Different people look at different things I start at the ground and look up

Then the engine compartment

If you have a mechanic plan a easy $2000.00 to get neglected maintenance caught up.

Even more if a timing belt service is due something to always consider with a newer vehicle over a 100,000 miles

Here's one I missed when I bought mine two years ago: rear axle seals leaking.
Pull off the brake drums on both sides to check for gear oil invading the brake shoe area.
If you can't remove the drums, sniff hard at the rear hubs, including underneath the car, for the telltale smell of gear oil.

I'm happy to report I'm now the proud owner of a 2002 4Runner. After a thorough review of the truck by my local mechanic, I used the minor maintenance issues noted to haggle down the price. I'm already planning a host of mods. Ah, the fever is back!

Thanks again guys for the recs. Due to the unknown age of the timing belt, that, and some other minor issues, will be addressed ASAP.
