So I just acquired a 85 22re 4x4 that has been sitting for 7 years. I went a head and changed the oil and filter, changed the coolant, checked the air filter, and now want to get the gas out. I have tried to siphon it and for some strange reason it wasn't panning out. I then proceeded to try to disconnect the gas line right before the engine hopping I would be able to drain it from there but again, no love. I'm new to this and would love some input on the situation. Also, if you guys have some recommendations it would be greatly appreciated! Really looking forward to this truck considering I have a 4runner that gets 13-16 mpg!

 

Drain plug on bottom of tank. If it's been sitting that long I would want to replace the sock on the fuel pump and check for rust inside though, which requires dropping the fuel tank. Not too hard to pull the tank out.

 

in the bottom of the tank, but been told here to look out for corrosion welding the tank and the plug into one mass which will destroy the threads on removal. Also was mentioned to check the top of the tank for rust through the accumulated dirt. I found neither in my San Diego 91 PU, just another plug for finding a SCal rig. These both seem plausible in other parts or the country though. No top rust and the drain plug was as pretty condition and strikingly similar in appearance to the oil drain plug(same engineers). I washed it out just the same with a 50/50 purple power soak and a thorough flush, not much came out after 25 years, mostly sand and fine debris

 

I have pulled three drain plugs and all three leaked when I reinstalled them. Most likely the tank will be nasty from sitting that long. I would loosen the bed bolts on the drivers side and remove the bolts on the passenger side and tilt the bed and remove the tank and clean it.

I would check Return line and the Vent line as they are probably clogged. If it is fuel injected, the "J" line in the fuel pump assembly is most likely clogged. You dont want to ruin the fuel pump assembly as it is hard to find and can be expensive.
