Toyota Hilux (Pickup) BuildUp from Chile.

Hello All:

I'm from Chile (South America) and I'm quite new on the off-road world.
Wanted to start saying that having a SFA Hilux (for you a toyota pickup) was a dream I had from long time, so I'm now living that dream.

I bought my truck last year, a 1992 Hilux SFA, And I have been giving some love to it since then, and of course making it suffer a little... but it's a toyota right?

Here is a photo of my rig as It's right now:

I quickly learned how strong this machine is, it has modified front suspension, rear diff locker, 10" alloy rims with 33" BfGoodrich MT.

Everyting is fine, but I'm not passing the "SMOG" test anymore, this truck has an old toyota 4Y engine (which is a 2.2L Carb) that I think you don't have there in the USA. the dash says 249.000 Kilometers, but I'm quite sure that is nothing close to be real.

Now I'm on the road of doing a major change there, I've bought a rolled 1999 4runner, with the 3.4 5VZ-FE engine. (here I'm driving it for going into the backyard. Yes, it just start and run )

What I have planned by now (I'm on planning stage) is to swap the full 3.4 and A340F, along with all other usable parts from the 4runner to the pickup. Also I plan to make a doubler as "I'm already there" using two gear driven transfer cases.

Finding parts is even more dificult here as it's for you, and I'm a networking engineer, so this mechanic world is just a hobby. That way you would understand why I still don't know for sure what to do.

My to-do list by now is:
  • Take out and "rebuild" (don't know how deep by now) the engine.
  • Take out and sell the original 4Y engine + G52 Tranny
  • Mount the 5VZ + auto tranny on the pickup
  • Make a doubler with TrailGear adapters using my existing pickup transfer case plus another identical one.
  • swap the entire wiring harness from the runner to the pickup
  • swap the necessary parts of the dash (may I swap the whole dash better?)
  • swap the front brake calipers, disks and master cylinder from 4runner to pickup

Now the questions for what I have no answer yet (some of them are above)
  • Is it possible to swap the complete dash from the 99 4runner to the 92 pickup?
  • Can I have the air conditioner running on the truck?
  • Can I make the cruise control work on the truck?
  • Should I use the power steering pump from the runner with the rest of the pickup power steering?
  • The engine has 340.000 KM (212.000 miles). How deep should I go on the rebuild?

Just wanted to share the history, but of course I will really appreciate any help, with my questions or any advice I have missed.

As I want to do almost everyting myself (with the help of friends and my father) I will be updating this thread on the way. But it's going to run slowly as I have zero experience on this.

In Chile at least (maybe also the rest of south america) that is the standard bed for this generation of hilux'es (Hilux is the name for the toyota pickup here).

here are a couple of pics of my pickup:

It's a really nice truck, I have crossed rivers, climbed rocks, played in sand or mud, and it never failed me. (here winter is starting now, time to play in the snow).
the only thing is that poor 4Y engine is hard to kill, but when it comes to go uphill on the higway or try to climb a sand dune... he goes out quickly.
That, and the SMOG test are the main reason to go for the 5VZ.

cheers!
(sorry if my english is not so good, I'm an spanish native speaker)

That is an awesome truck man. I see even those have the sagging seat belts lol.

I have been wondering how a 1st gen bed would look on my 3rd gen forever. I always wanted to bob the bed of a 1st gen and put it on my 3rd gen so I could retain my original bed.

Thanks for sharing.

not a 79-83 bed, lines aren't close, definitely 89-95.

That is a nice looking truck you have. I am surprised the rolled runner did not have the diesel motor in it. Everywhere else but here in the states you get the solid axle, four door and diesel. We get left out of alot of choices. Looking forward to your build. Welcome to Yotatech.

Chile is a very special market for the cars... yo can find here almost any brand and with models from all around the world.

there are some diesel hilux surf (same thing as 4runner) but they were not an standard on the dealer.

I'm still planning the final build... it's my first time, so I want to have almost anything tied down before I start.

Thanks everyone for your comments =)
