92 Rear gears whining

I've got a 92 with 350K miles and going strong. The rear end is whining when I give it gas and I believe it needs new carrier bearings. I really want to do this myself but an unsure about "loading" the bearings and shims...etc. How difficult is this repair?? Any advice on whether to walk away and take it to a mechanic or tips on how?? Thanks, Smithoman

Go here www.gearinstalls.com and do some reading. When you get done you'll have a much better idea if this is something you want to tackle.

Got torque wrenches and dial indicator??

Possible to do it yourself, but likelyhood of good long lasting results are not so good unless you have experience, or guidance from someone who does.

Cheapest fix would be to get a used 3rd member from the wreckers.

Make sure that the gear ratio in the replacement is the same as what you have now.
