every time i shift to 5th its like i went into pud gear, im getting 28 mpg at 70+ with 360,000 on my 22re-c,, an when im in 4th, wich is most of the time at 70-85 mph. when ever i put the w56 in 5th gear its like its a taller ratio for a higher hp motor. anyone else have this feeeling?

 

or there must be differant ratio's for the w56 years, ya ? its not all the time im flying down the freeway but at times when i do, i want to change the ratio so it grabs an takes me faster. rather than just a cruise gear

You're getting 28mpg at 70+ MPH but you don't like the fact that your brick shaped, under powered 4runner doesn't want to go faster? These trucks weren't made for high speed. Enjoy the almost double MPG that you're getting over a lot of people on this forum and if you want to go faster, buy a vehicle with more power.

 

4th gear at 70-85 mph on a 22re?

it sounds like the rear end gearing and the tire size are not matched up correctly.

 

My 3vze would never want to go that fast. I'm glad I pulled it out.

 

As OSV said, your gear/tire setup may be off. In 5th gear at 70 mph, what is your engine RPM? What size tire and what differential gear ratio?

 

70??? Ok your 10mph off of where I start to lose control of the vehicle due to aerodynamics of a brick. Really how much faster do you think these can go?

 

I find that 5th actually does have pretty good power around 70, even up reasonable hills.

Any lower than 65-70 and my truck will chug up a hill til I downshift... damn left lane hogs!

I got mine up to 85 once. I could have gone faster but I didn't want to push my 3.0 too hard. I felt the same way as you in terms of feeling like it was losing control.

 

i think my 22re/w56 is fine in 5th gear. no power for passing anyone when you're up past 70mph, but adequate enough to maintain speed once you get there. Tacoma with 3rz, freaking racecar compared to my truck on the highway.

i've got mine up around 95-100 once - on a flat highway and with a tail wind. This was when I first got my truck, everything stock except 31" tires. If there's a decent head wind, 80 is sometimes difficult to maintain. Now with 33s/4.88 and small lift, I regularly take it up to 80mph every time I drive the highway, RPMs around 3400ish - 75/80mph is pretty much the average speed of traffic around my area...at least when it's not gridlocked

 

I did 90 on the freeway pulling two Snowbikes with 22re and 37s driving home for 20 min or so. It was tapped out though. Header cams exhaust and supra intake made big difference.

 

Either you have much bigger tires than stock or someone has swapped out your gears in the rear end. 2wd or 4wd? Using gps to confirm actual speed?

Your mpg suggest that your speedo is way off.

 

I'd say your speedo is a little off, pertinent info like gears n tires ratios/sizes are missing, so it's hard to say. 28mpg at 75 is amazing for a 22re. I only get that at 55-60, hard tires, etc. I'm all stock, on 30x9.5s, and my 5th still has decent power at 70-75. I don't run that fast very often, and for a pass, still downshift to 4th, before continuing.

 

When my 89 22re was in top shape I could cruise the freeway around 90.... which was rather terrifying. Now at 35 she bucks and stalls out.

5th gear is good for flat long distances. Any kind of incline requires a downshift or two. Be happy your rig goes that fast to begin with. If you can maintain 65-70 uphill, you're winning the race.

This. I'm 100% stock 22-re with 30" tires and I bog down on hills running in the 60-70 range but about 75-80 i can cruise pretty good.

I for sure don't get 28mpg though...

Oh and I have hit 90 mph according to the speedo, and my calculations show that 30" tires are 7% larger than stock so thats about 96mph. I tend to cruise around 80 (85 corrected) that gets me 22mpg.
