So Long story short. I had a new clutch installed in my 95 4runner 3.0 4wd a few weeks ago, works great. Just got my truck back from a head gasket job from the same very reputable mechanic.
I noticed on the way home that I was having to press the clutch pedal really really far down to the floor in order to shift. Almost standing on it. I get home to pull into the drive and try to put it from Neutral to First gear and it won't even shift into gear.
After sitting for 30 min, I went back out and everything seems to be working fine.. Would this be some sort of hydraulic issue with the master/slave cylinder?
When they did the clutch job it was a full kit with the bearing and all. The reservoir isnt missing any fluid, however the last 2 inches until the floor with the pedal I hear some sort of semi-metal on metal sound from behind the clutch pedal when it reaches very near to the floor.
Ideas? It seems to be working fine now. Should I just put a new master/slave in and be done with it? I really don't want to try to drive this thing back to the shop to find out theres nothing wrong with the clutch and have to pay parts/labor for something I can do myself..
Ok so I went outside and took a video of what is happening as of right now.
You will see that when the clutch pedal is depressed towards the end of the video that it is scraping against a cylinder of sorts with a wire and button/switch attached to it. It kind of looks like the Master Cylinder push rod is buckling a bit at the joint where it attaches to the pedal.
The actual mounting bracket appears to be in place, but you can see that the clutch has actually been rubbing this round cylinder so much that its worn the metal off of it and left a strange wear shaped edge..
You can hear it scraping with the volume up good. You can also see the master cylinder push rod thing moving downward as the pedal is pushed in at the joint from the adjusting bolt/rod to the shiny round silver thing before the pedal connector (Sorry I dont know what this stuff is called)
Should I just replace the whole master cylinder? What is that thing that it's rubbing on with the switch and harness attached to it? I'm not even sure if this is what was causing the total failure I initially experienced, it hasn't happened again but upon inspection this is the only strange thing i've found as of yet.
Ended up buying a new master/slave and replaced both. Turns out there was a problem with where the push rod from the pedal mount had a piece of plastic housing that was broken, allowing a sort of buckle when the pedal was depressed. Pic attached. Plus a pic of the sludge that came out when I removed the old master cyl.
