transfer case swap/ removal question

Not that it's needed all appears good, but for future reference based on my
recent previous experience with the Haynes manual...in the 91 4X4 P/U 5 Speed M/T

Would I really have to remove the Transfer case/ Transmission as a unit??

The Haynes manual wants you to remove it and stand the tranny upended
and pull the transfer unit off straight from the top.. REALLY???

That just doesn't sound like logical Toyota engineering.

THX J

Manual or auto trans?
I've assembled my manual trans and transfer case facing up on the bell housing, it's pretty easy when your by yourself than putting it together laying down IMO.
The auto trans and transfer cases are made as one unit, not as simple as the manual trans.

so standing up like Haynes says??

5 speed, I would want to drop the shafts and muscle it down, do what's required and muscle it back up,
wondering the reason hauling both out and turning them vertical is called for
thx

No clue. But yes you can remove it keeping the trans in place.

I have done it both ways but one time I will say I absolutley could not get the tcase off. I pulled the transmission with the tcase still attached and stood it on its end and it popped right out. Not sure why it did not come off while under the truck. I will be replacing a tcase soon and will just pull the whole assembly out from now on.

I was just wondering about it

I could drop the tcase by myself, the combined pair not so much
Just hope I never have to do it, can't understand why it couldn't just be slid
into the back of the tranny and bolted up, maybe a linkage issue..
So far as I can tell tcase shifts OK without the boot and plate,
and I've been offered viable free solutions by 4crawler.com folks
but not sure till it fires up and rolls for the first time..
thx J

Just got back from pick a part

Nice day for little piece parts, no big tools with me.
I found a PS gear unit hanging from the arm in a 92 Runner,
somebody was looking for something it was attached to apparently.
Did puter check, says no for my 91, but only thing I see different
is a missing bleed fitting, otherwise identical, I have 60 days, and I'll
be spending that in the yard anyhow, only store credit ya know...
On the way out I saw where somebody took a tranny and left the
transfer case, for the life of me I can't figure out how it could be a problem,
appeared to drop right out no problem, looked almost new inside...
