22RE Gas Mileage
This is my first post, I have used information from yotatech for years and finally decided that I wanted to be part of the community. Thank you to all who have posted, my truck wouldn't be the truck it is today without you guys.
I know there are several threads about this but after digging I want to hear new ideas (old are also welcome).
I have a 300 mile commute every couple weeks, and use my truck daily and I want to maximize my fuel efficiency (I'm a broke college student - Go Cougs)
First off, please hit me with your mileage and what ways you have found to get better mileage. I am getting about 18 in town and 20 highway ( stock size street tires)
I have already heard that the 22 RE wasn't built for mileage it was built to be bullet proof so I recognize this.

Just about right.
I get between 18 and 21 MPG mixed driving. That's on a newly-rebuilt engine.
Just maintain it well, and don't take shortcuts, don't do hack wiring jobs and it will keep on working well for you. I'm very happy with my 1986 MoreFunner.

Need to know more about the truck..!!
I had a 94 22re 5 speed 2wd extracab about 10 years ago or more. I also had a long commute everyday and was averaging 26mpg per tank. I lowered it 2 inches and over a month of checking I was then averaging 28mpg. All I had done to it was a cheap bolt on air filter so I could clean it when I wanted which generally was every other week. My dad the great man he is turned the ignition back and plugged the egr vacuum line. I also had some lighter aluminum wheels and fancy tires. So with my teenage driving habits I gained 2mpg by lowering ride height 2"

I have a 300,000mi 1986 4wd 22R-E automatic Xtracab with doug thorley headers, 2" exhaust, 4.88 ring and pinion gears and 31" a/t tires and when I drive on flat land at 45-50 mph, I can actually get 30 mpg, driving 99% interstate and 1% city. I might be able to improve the consumption though since my spark plugs are a couple of years old, probably reducing the gap to .0001.

I have a 87 4Runner 4x4 5 speed I get most of the time in the winter between 12 to 15 mpg hubs always locked long idle times
Going for mileage get all the unneeded weight out if I cleaned out the tools and other parts it would be 1200 pounds lighter .

I has looking on toyotaminis.com and found a cool build by a guy who called his 94 Toyota TruckNorris. He was using it for autocross making both engine and suspension mods. He lowered it about 3inches front and back and installed Belltech swaybars. I believe he ended up using a combo of 245/40-17 and 275/40-17 in the rear but had to use a baseball bat to stretch the fenders out a little bit so it wouldn't rub. He's played a bit with spacers to get it right. I never found where he listed the spacing.
He did most of the mods and built quite a bit of it himself but ended up getting into an accident in the end. Cool build with a sad ending.

Because MarlinCrwaler and others aren't pumped enough to make a short throw shifter for our 2wd trucks I'd like to see what he makes for them.
This is one he made for his car.

Pump your tires up. Run "stretched" tires, slightly narrower rubber than rim. I lost 1/2 mpg or so going from 235/75-15 on 8x15 to 30x9.5 on 6.5x15. Less sidewall flex with the stretch, but I hated it.

My commute is 25ish miles each way to/from work and is 90% highway. The 10% is around town getting to and from the highway and is a bit hilly.
My 22RE motor has about 150k on it and burns about 1.25 quarts of oil every 1,000 miles. Its tuned up with the timing is advanced to 8-10 degrees with the jumper installed. The engine is completely stock and has a stock intake and exhaust.
I have manual locking front hubs and a 5-spd. I am running 31x10.5" tires and sporting the stock 4.10 gearing.
Now I get to brag. I get 25.5MPG!!!!!! That is including a 1.091 correction factor for the incorrect tire size. When it is cold as hell out my mileage dips to 22MPG. Still not too bad. I generally cruise between 65-70mph.
I imagine if I had a free flowing exhaust and intake, stock size tires, and drove more carefully I would probably be knocking on 30mpg!!!!
