Weber causing fuel pumps to leak.
I have a 32/36 on my 83 22r. I didn't replace the fuel pump when I did my timing and gaskets in November, but about a month later, it started to leak. I put new gaskets on it as well as a new spacer from LCE. That's not where it leaks though. I find fuel collecting under the lip where the steel top is pressed onto the cast housing. It leaked quite a bit of fuel, so I replaced it. The new one has a different shaped top also. Now I have a new one that leaks in the same spot. I'm running a Mr gasket type 5.5 psi and below and a gauge. It reads 3.5 when I have it for set to 5.5. Could these be causing my pump to fail? Any other ideas

Not on a Toyota but basically the mechanical pumps are similar on various models and I experinced a similar problem. Are you using the same brand of fuel pump? I wonder if it could be poor quality pump. Also the Return Lines tend to clog on these and I wonder if it could be causing to much pressure and causing your leak.

I don't know what the original was, but it was banged out. It's being replaced because it was under warranty. I'm just worried that there might be something else causing it.... I will try cleaning out my return line and replace the rubber sections first, maybe take the pressure gauge off to see if it makes any difference.

So the spacer that came with the pump is just a hair slimmer than the one I picked up from LCE a few months back. I'm going to see if the slimmer spacer will change the pressure output also

I would think the thicker spacer would cause less pressure as the cam bearing would not be able to push it as far. I too have seen varying widths of spacers for the fuel pump.

Watch out for the Mr Gasket dial regs. They're known leakers.
The Weber is not causing your leakage. It's probably a manufacturing defect. If anything, a slimmer spacer will increase pump pressure as the pump arm will compress deeper. Stock mechanical pumps only put out 3-5 psi max as they are. The 3.5psi max you are reading off of your pump would be considered normal and is not a problem.
A fuel pressure reg will not solve this problem. You don't need one for street use with a Weber and a dial-type Mr Gasket reg is more of a liability than it is a help. when they start to leak (and it will) they can be a fire hazard. if you intend to keep using it I highly recommend a fuel-rated fire extinguisher be in your vehicle at all times.
The fuel return lines on these trucks seem to go against conventional wisdom and can cause serious fuel problems when blocked off, plugged or not properly functioning. A lot of it is due to Weber carbs having a weak needle and seat. Make sure your pump is hooked up right and that the return is working as it should. I would also suggest a respectable pump replacement. CARQUEST or NAPA should have good name-brand pumps for you. I don't know what you're running now.

I''ve removed the regulator and used my compressor to blow through the return line last night. It sounded like I broke through some restrictions and it flows through really well. I guess now I get to wait and see if it starts leaking again.
