Racing Seats that will fit nicely in a 79-83 pickup?

Hey just curious if anyones put any racing seats in a 79-83 pickup? And by fit nicely I dont mean the correct tracks to bolt right up. I mean not being too big of a seat. Seems to me if the seats are too tall it would block your back window and create blind spots. And if the bottom of the seat is too long its going to take up too much leg space. I'm pretty tall and need all the leg room I can get. I have a set of 10" subs going behind the seats I have just enough room with the stock bench seat to make a fiberglass box for them without losing any room for the seat. I'm wanting to find a set of racing seats that will work well with a 4 point harness. And this is a regular cab.

Getting all of that in a single cab will be tricky. i had 2 12"s at one point and it was LOUD! i had some mazda 3 seats and they were a bit tall, but i did get the electrical hooked up to the seats. =)

I later swapped for some cheaper "racing seats" they sit much lower, but i am a short guy. Most will fit in there will a little creativity.

I had a set of APC "race" buckets in mine for quite a while, traded a buddy for some softer seats recently cuz I'm getting old. They were pretty cheap, fit well, and were decently comfortable. A little different looking than these but mine are about 8yrs old:

I believe I paid $300 for the pair new when I got them. I'm 6' tall and they left a decent amount of legroom/headroom (I say decent because 6' and over struggle with first gen cabs in general). I'd say they sat about the same as the stock buckets, maybe a pinch lower. Thigh bolster goosed you every time you got in or out, but you're going to have that with race type seats.

A set from one of the big names in aftermarket seats like mastercraft or corbeau will be way nicer I'm sure, but for a budget set of seats these were hard to beat! Hope this helps!

They were pretty much these ones. http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/de...0600&ppt=C0379

You can find cheap seats all over. Might as well get some decent ones ($400 a set) think i paid $250 for mine on CL.

The cheap racing seats are really unconfortable (at least the ones I've tried including apc), you can feel the structure when sitting it in, it's not nice, but a good racing seat is very confortable and supporting. I love my swift gti seats, they fit nicely, I sit nice and low on the floor, and are very confortable and have great support. del sol seats, acura rsx, celica gts, old school prelude, they are all junkyard alternatives.

Thanks for the info. I dont have a ton of money to spend so a junkyard alternative would be cool. Would like to find seats with the holes in them for the harness... like your Swift GTI seats. The Acura RSX seats look really nice as well.

Best thing is to go junkyard hunting, and it's fun too.

I agree totally, I just put the apc's out there as a cheap option. The APC's I had were suportive but not very comfortable, that's why I traded for some mystery seats that my buddy had. If you're a wider guy you won't care for them either, my brother hated the APC's, but once he shoehorned his big butt into the passenger seat he wasn't going anywhere. That's another reason to do the junkyard search, you can give the seat a test sit and see if they work for you.

I really wish I could get a set of the 80's Supra 7 way adjustable seats, had a girlfriend that had an 83 Supra with them, the best seats I've ever sat in.

Good luck on your junkyard run!

Well called all the junkyards in town.. So far all I've found is 3 sets of Celica GTS seats at a salvage yard for $100 a pair which seems like a really good deal to me.. (havent seen them yet). I'm gonna go check them out on pay day. Hoping I can find a few more options before then though.

I've done a lot of research in this department for my truck. After some measuring and searching, I have found the the Corbeau Moab seat are the closest match to the factory seat dimensions and are relatively economical at around $250 each. They also make seat brackets for our trucks, but I think that I'm going to just modify my original seat rails to fit the seats.

I'm basically going to be laying the subs on the floor behind the seat and building as big a box as I can without interfering with my seat. And as far as I can tell it will be possible as long as I use fiber glass to build the box.

Thanks for the suggestion kawazx636. I'll keep those in mind when I get some money for the seats. Having something close to factory dimensions would be awesome.
