ok I'm might be going on an impromptu road trip on sunday and neither of us have a winch. Well I have a winch I just need to mount it. I pulled it out of the box (its a small little sucker). I have no clue how to attach it to the TJM.
If someone who has done this before could just sort of post on here, and walk me throught it, I'd appreciate it.

My M8000 was EASY to install... and it works like a charm!!!

 

mounting it is easy do you need help with wiring it up???

 

Is this the direction I mount the winch in? So I bolt the four screws from the front side of the bumper into the back of the winch, right?

aaaaarrrrgggghhhh I searched and I searched ... not a single write up on how to mount the winch. Lots of stuff on buying a winch, and wireless control for a winch, but not what I need.

I guess I'm a true dumbass, b/c its so simple ....

 

ok I got some sugar, and now I can think a little more clearly. I think it has to be the other way around so that you can access that silver lever from the bottom side of the bumper, right?

most warn winches mount to the <whatever> by 4 small grade 5 bolts.

that's it.

biggest obstacle you might run into is clearance around your bumper.

rest is wiring 2 wires from winch to battery.

attache remote and you're set.

now if you have to fabricate, that is a diff subject.

but given enough help to lift the winch, i'd say less than 30 minutes...

 

pic #2 is right. i had to rotate the clutch housing a bit so that i could adjust the lever when the winch is mounted.

One other important thing you might want to do is use blue LocTite on the housing bolts when reinstalling. I trashed a Ramsey winch after the bolts worked loose. Completely destroyed the gearbox before I realized what had happened.

 

Please explain. So I stick the bottom two bolts through the fairlead, then bumper into the back of the winch. Where do I stick in the lockTite?

It goes on the threads of the bolts, like anti-seize but pro-seize

Oh I thought it was like a nut or washer I had to stick on there somewhere. Ok going to Home Depot now to get some.

 

Loctite® Threadlocker Blue
They also have red and green.

The Blue is what you want. The others require heating/big tool to un-loc.

What we are referring to are the tiny bolts around the gearbox/clutch housing. They can vibrate loose over time as you drive around. You most likely won't discover this until you use the winch.

 

I went to home depot to pick that stuff up and they were out of stuck, and I didn't have time to drive up to the next one. So its not going to be on in time, also the BL didn't show up .. so the front of my truck is off till monday-tues.

ok so I need to remove the bolts on the housing, put that blue stuff on, and then put them back in. Also do this for the bolts that I attach to the bumper, right?

What part of Maryland are you in?

It is a very simple install, really.

It is easier if you pull the bumper. Lay the winch in the bumper. Slip those square nuts in the holes in the mounting pads on the winch. The simply bolt it to the face of the bumper.

The get some help and lift the bumper back into place and bolt it back on.

Now comes the hard part, running the wires and it is not that hard at all.

I had mine mounted and pulling down trees in about an hour start to finish.

Gadget, I'm in Mont Co.

I have the winch bolted on all ready, but now I guess I have to unbolt it to put the threadlocker on there. I haven't even gotten to the wiring yet. I did however pick up an optima yellow battery, and a copper pipe, b/c I couldn't find any copper plates, so that I could extend out the battery terminals. So I'm going to pound the copper pipe flat, and then drill two holes through it for the battery terminal and one for the battery cable.

I'm just waiting for the Body lift to get in, and then once that is done then put the bumper on and try to figure out the wiring.

There is a thread on TTORA-Va, they found a new trail and thier going out tomorrow. I was trying to make it to that. But now i can't .. this sucks

I tried to to follow the pics on your webpage, so it kinda looks like yours. Why do you need to redo yours? Also the link for the pathfinder write up has some great pics to follow.

I picked up an Optima yellow on Friday as well, and I got some copper pipe yesterday to extend the battery terminal. I then banged the pipe into a copper flat plate, and then driller two holes through it. Attach one side to battery cable and the other side to the battery. Anyone forsee any problems with this set up. I'm also going to cut off a small piece of plywood to place under the battery to raise it up a bit.
