Hello,

Every time it rains, I seem to get water on the floor of my passenger side. The carpet stays wet until it dries. I usually soak it up with newspaper and/or pop the rubber drain hole open. For what it's worth, I have had the windshield replaced once. Has anyone ever experienced this and figured out how to prevent it? It's a 1987 22R P/U. If I need to throw a bead of caulk somewhere, I can do that but I figured I might ask all the knowledgeable folks here first. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

By any chance, do you run the air conditioner when it rains? (best way to cut down condensation) If the drain from the evaporator box is plugged, the box will fill with water and overflow onto the carpet.

 

No air conditioner on my base stock 1987 22R P/U.

 

I have problem right now in the same year and model truck. Check your coolant level just to make sure its not your heater core. if not then we are most likely in the same position and need to hunt down that leak. Any luck with yours?

 

The channel that holds the windshield can rust and have holes to leak water.... mine does

 

Good chance it's the seal around your windshield. It could be compromised by rust or just old and cracked. It happened to my '91 at the top corner, passenger side. The water ran down the roof pillar and drained out next to the kick panel.

Leaks cause of this.

 

I wonder why it is almost always the passenger side... Maybe because of the camber of the road, causes more flow of water to the passenger side?

My '87 22R is leaking as well, on both sides. I haven't pulled the windshield trim off yet, but I'm sure I've got rust holes underneath of it.

Just bought a cheap TIG welder, so I'll either be filling the holes with body filler, or welding on patches pretty soon.

 

Mine does this as well. I have a hole where the antennae use to be, sealed it up with tape and that helped... till I realized that it was also leaking through the windshield seal and a little gap where some rust dug in.

My theory on why it only happens on the passenger side: Thats where the ECU is. Of course its gonna leak right on top of the ECU.

Get rid of the windshield trim. It's notorious for trapping dirt and water underneath and rusting out the pillars. I removed mine and filled the gap with black roofing calk. Problem solved.

 

The trim looks fancy though! I rather like it.

Care to snap a pic of yours with no trim? I'm curious. The windshield place did kind of a crappy job putting the trim back on and I have been half considering scrapping it anyway

 

It's raining pretty hard where I live right now. I am going to try and see if a piece of tape will help things. If I have success, I am going to drop a little bead of caulk. Should I look at the channel across the top or down the channel towards the antenna?

 

Why not both, you're going to want to pull that off and get it done the right way asap anyway. Otherwise you'll probably have the classic rusted pillar in no time- and that is quite a bit harder / more $$ to fix.

 

No one has mentioned that the leak could be coming from under the cowl as well. Three body panels come together and are only sealed from the factory, but there is a high spot that holds water and doesn't drain down the inner fender. Eventually this will rust through and the water runs down on your floor. This is what mine looked like before I repaired it.
