Its a 22re with 256,000 miles. Need some advice with the truck, here is how the problem occurred. I was driving home yesterday and the truck just died so I coasted to the side and cranked it over, it cranked slower then normal like it was struggling to turn over but finally restarted. Pulled back out and noticed a major lack of power then suddenly the engine started shaking bad and it got very noisy. My first thought was it sounded like an externally blown out headgasket. Got it home and did a compression test, front 2 cylinders made ok pressure around 120 the back 2 made zero. Pulled off valve cover and cranked it over and found the cam shaft broke right in the middle where it goes through the middle mount. So what could cause this? I find it hard to believe that it just broke on its own could something have put it into a bind? I loosened up the rocker arms on the affected two cylinders so the valves would close and did another compression test. it pulled about 20-30 so at least the pistons are still moving. Not sure if the truck is worth fixing at this point with the miles it has and severe frame rust i have mostly just been using it around the farm the last couple years. But if its reasonable fixable I would like to have a go after 13 years of ownership im kind of attached to the old truck.

 

Are any of the push rods or springs damaged or stuck?

 

once you pull it apart look at the break it could have been slowly cracking from new just be glad of the mileage you did get.

looking at the rest of the cam may help you figure out just what happened .

one bearing no longer was getting oil causing the pressure to change on the cam.

could be any number of things.

Fixing should be pretty easy to find a used head to put on .

If that is not an option sell it like it is someone would be happy to take on a project.

 

I have seen oil starvation to a cam journal cause the camshaft to twist or break. If you want to try replacing the camshaft just make sure the bearings and oil passages are clean.


I think it's cool that you were able to actually start and drive it with 2 cylinders down.

 

Thanks for the replys! My concern was centered on the fact that I assumed something else caused the cam to fail and how excessively noisy the engine got after it failed, sounded like an exhaust manifold leak. I guess I will have to tear it down farther to really figure out what happened.

 

Are these interference motors?
If so, the noise could have been pistons hitting valves.

Soon as I finish putting the OME lift on the pathfinder I will have enough room to pull the truck in and tear it down. I will definitely photograph the carnage. I was worried that the piston may be wacking the valves didnt know for sure it was an interference design.
I really need a bigger truck for pulling a goose neck trailer but I need my toyota for its compact size maneuvering through tight spaces on the farm. I use it everyday for hauling water, feed, hay ect.. Even have had a full grown goat with a broken leg in the cab getting it back to the barn.

 

Dug into the truck a little today, the bearing is obviously bad and has chewed up the cam shaft and head

Still cant believe that scoring the outer part of cam shaft would cause it to break
