eBay snorkel opinions

From what I can tell, Safari no longer makes a snorkel for 2nd gen 4runners. Has anyone tried the eBay versions? From my research they seem to be decent quality, only complaint I have heard is that the template doesn't always line up correctly. That is a big deal as I do not want to be putting a big hole in my fender in the wrong spot.

Link to said snorkel:

I don't want this to become a debate on whether people really need a snorkel or not. I have hydrolocked my motor, putting a rod through the side of my block. I do not enjoy water crossings but they do happen and I would rather error on the side of caution.

Thanks everyone.

If you have to add a bilge pump to your vehicle, maybe you shouldn't be wheeling it that hard! You'd think that guy would focus on maybe getting some bigger tires or something instead of pretending his jeep is a submarine!

Sorry that's all I could think of . Maybe you could buy a cheap fender and use that for setting up the kit .

Those videos make laugh every time . But I bet that guy is having a lot of fun . He definitely wheels the heck out that thing . Check out his other videos.

The template being correct is the biggest concern of mine. Your cheap fender idea is pretty good. Thanks!

I pulled the trigger on the kit. If anyone is interested I will make a thread about how it goes.

i'm sure you'll be fine with the template. just put it up to the snorkel and the rig a few times to make sure everything lines up. if it doesn't for whatever reason, remark the template where the holes should be. measure 4x, drill once

Nice! I'm considering one for my first-gen 4Runner, but want it on passenger side to work with battery-intake swap and keep duct length to minimum. Not for river crossing, but to keep intake farther from stirred up desert dust.

Please let us know how the install goes, and how product quality is.

Believe it or not our favorite sight, Mr Man-in-Brown showed up with my snorkel today. I didn't believe it when they showed the estimated delivery date, but wow. I'm impressed!

I'll post some pics tomorrow but so far it looks good. I don't think I'm gonna get a chance to install it for at least a couple weeks, if not more, so hopefully you guys can be patient. Doing a whole slew of upgrades to the 4runner so it'll be out of commission for a while.

For that kind of $$ i may order one for my 81 and make it fit.
I don't really need one but it would look cool

Here are a few shots. The kit did include a template, you cut it out on the dotted line and then match to your fender. Not sure how accurate it is yet, I need to check that out still.

This is the piece that connects to the stock airbox. I have a 3.4 and we never moved the battery to the drivers side like most do. So my plan is to run an intake tube from the drivers side to the passenger to connect.

I ordered a Spectre inline air filter that I plan to use. Once it arrives I will have to check if it is an oiled filter, if so I will try and find a dry Amsoil to replace it with.

I don't know that I could find a snorkel that would fit correctly on the passenger side. I don't think it will be too restrictive, especially at speed where the air is being pushed down the snorkel. Time will tell I suppose.

Well I finally got around to getting this installed. Yesterday I headed up to my friends place because I was more comfortable with him hacking into my fender than I was.

First of all the template was close, but not perfect. The holes closest to the door were not correct, luckily we checked before drilling. Even after the initial holes were drilled there was some hogging out to make things work. All covered by the snorkel.

Here's some pics of the install. I do not have it hooked up to my intake yet since I have the 3.4 and we are going to have to get creative.

Once we got the big hole drilled, it seemed like there was a gap at the top horizontal part where it met the fender. We decided to heat it up slightly to see if we could make it better. Not sure this was necessary because it always returned to shape. Right now it sits perfect against the fender.

My buddy hogging out the hole a little to make it all fit. The hole is suppose to be 80mm, which is slightly over 3". We had a 3" hole saw so this is what we did.

There are no instructions included with the kit. WTF. Near as we could tell with the hardware included, they wanted us to rivet the upper bracket to the a-pillar. I wasn't crazy about that so we came up with the idea of putting in nut-certs. Turned out incredible and now the snorkel is removable if needed.
