Complete rebuild '95 22re now it won't start.

I've just completed a full rebuild on my 22re and reinstalled the engine and trans, but when we've attempted to start the motor all we get is an occasional backfire through the intake side. I'm positive the timing chain was installed correctly and it does seem the distributor is correctly positioned and my plug wires are in sequence. I've gone back over everything and can't find any hoses or connectors not hooked up or out of place, I just don't know what else to do.

Can someone please help me.

Start at square 1, make sure cam dot is lined up and the valves correspond with the stroke and on tdc the dizzy rotor lines up with #1 cylinder on the cap

70ssclone Thanx for replying. I did start back @ square 1 only to realize I'm a moron. I had the dizzy cap flipped which was making me believe everything was or should have been peachy. After that discovery I realized the dizzy itself was 180 off, and got the pig to start. Upon starting up though I found that the plumbing for the heater hose to the back of the water pump is leaking like crazy, so I'm gonna have to undo the bracket to power steering to get back in there and rtv the ˟˟˟˟ out of it.
