ct20 to t3 swap help?

Hello all.

I have been searching and searching to no end looking for a T3 write up and simply cannot find anything but small and vague "thoughts."

I have now a stock 87 22ret pickup.
Motor rebuilt less than 1,000 miles ago.
CT20 turbo

I just purchased a T3 turbo. It says AR60 and I have only read about AR63.
The person I got it from said that it was a stage 3 turbo but thats really all he knew.

So far What I know about the swap is that I will need an adapter plate to mount it on my stock manifold and that I will some how need to make a new oil pipe or so.

I read that I need a wide band O2 sensor. Is that true?
Do I need a piggyback computer to control boost?
How much does an intercooler really help?

If anyone can walk me through this or show me a thread that can answer all of my questions, I would very much appreciate it. Thank you.

Have you tried this forum http://www.22rte-trucks.com/simplemachinesforum/ ?
It sounds like you didnt do a whole lot of research before hand and just bought a turbo off CL.

I've done enough to know that it can be done, but I just got done with a ridiculous move and my turbo is about to blow out my brand new engine so I need to get this done asap and I need to get it right. If I knew everything then I would not have posted and thats the whole point of this damn forum.
I did see stuff on that site nd didn't find what I needed.

You need a wideband to see your afr and make sure its where it should be. Piggy back computer would be helpful of youre trying to tune it up... Megasquirt would prob be the way to go if youre going that route.

I dont know anything about the 22ret, but I assume the stock turbo is internally gated. If you go to an aftermarket turbo, you're going to have to weld in an external wastegate and plumb it into the vacuum system.

Theoretically you could skip the wideband and piggyback if you keep the boost level no higher than stock, just need the wastegate added to regulate it.

Thanks for your response.
If memory serves me correctly, the ct20 goes have an external wastegate.
The t3 I purchased came along with an external wastegate. Its not intalled but I think I can figure that out.

Am I going to be able to get a wideband that will plug right into my existing harness?

No, wideband will have its own wiring and controller/gauge.
I have an AEM for my gto, not terribly expensive and doesnt require calibration.

Wideband is pointless unless your using aftermarket FMS.
Suggest use linear AFR gauge, The digital gauge are hard to read with the 22re/3vz ECU control system as it fluctuates up and down constantly.

With the adapter plate i got to mount my Garrett to my exhaust manifold, the downpipe looks like it'll hang to the side instead of downward. This also means that the oil retun will be pointed towards one side instead of the bottom.
How big if any threat is this and what do i do about it?
