88 4Runner keeps killing fuel pumps.

My 4Runner is not quite ready for a DD and it sits a week or so then I start it and drive it a little. However, it has been burning through fuel pumps quick. I started with an eBay special and burnt through two of those over the course of a few weeks. Then I bought a Bosch with a lifetime warranty. I am now on my third. Something isn't right, but I don't know where to begin??

Any suggestions?

When you do get around to driving it a little how well does it run?

Have you measured the voltage on the terminals for the fuel pump?

Interesting. Do you run your tank at near empty all the time?

Electrically, check your wiring. Make sure that instead of a fuse a jumper isn't installed. Check the relay for proper operation. Check the wires to the fuel pump, check if they are making contact with anything they shouldn't be.

Haven't measured yet. It runs great when it's running. No issues at all.

A few quick runs, things looked clean and no exposed wires. Will do thorough.

My tank is at half a tank. I haven't even ran a tank of gas out of it in 6 months. It runs fine, and I keep the screen guard on the fuel pump so I wouldn't think it's the gas or sludge, would you?

well during the pump change you should inspect and clean the tank as necessary... so, you tell us, you think something in there could restrict the fuel flow?

It looked clean. There wasn't anything that I could see floating around the bottom with a flashlight, but I didn't pull the tank and do a scrub.

the pumps just quit altogether? there must be a short someplace. if it were me id run all new wiring and rule out wiring issues. i have experienced the power wire fraying inside the tank as it rubbed metal parts over the years. never caused a problem though.

The Return lines can get clogged with rust and gunk and put more stress on the pump. I would check that as well as what has been mentioned above.

Yeah, they are dead. I'll remove and try again but nothing. Get it replaced, and will fire up first time.

Red face

If you have put less then 20 gallons of Fuel and went through all these pumps .

Your luck is real bad.
OR

Then you have something major wrong!!!

Not pushing the fuel through the return line??

Lines all hooked up correct

Bosch fuel pumps are not great but you should get a few gallons before they quit.
