I'm new here but got a 91 toyota pickup (2wd) about six months ago and have lurked here a bit so thought I'd join.

My truck has a real bad leak in the power steering hose. I went to fix it and got a new one from o'reilleys. I took the old one almost all the way off before I realized that the part I got from o'reilleys is not the right part. The one I got looks like this:

But mine does not seem to like that. The metal part that loops back to the 16 mm threaded pipe does not loop back like that on mine. Under the radiator it seems to go all the way to the other wheel and then connects in somewhere over there.
When I search online all the pictures I set are of the one I bought but my truck definitely has something different. Anyone know what part number I need?

Unfortunately the dealer wants 800 for it!

I'm going to try to find a used one or maybe have one made at a custom hydraulic shop.

 

Sounds like a good approach. I'm surprised Gates doesn't make a replacement though. Try searching in RockAuto.com

 

search in rockauto.com, but reference the part numbers to your cars vin.

I usually find the right part at toyotapartsoverstock.com, and check which of the part numbers are the right one for my car (with VIN) at toyotapartszone.com . This way I am sure the part will fit.

At toyotapartsoverstock, you can enter the part number you have, then click "fitment" to see which vehicles it covers. As you can see, it's almost all years, but I think 4wd v. 2wd makes a difference, and ABS definitely does.

So, try RockAuto. For mine, there are at least 8 different hoses. The sure fire way (as Gevo says) is use your VIN. But there are also pictures of all of them. And if you click the "Info" links, you'll get alternate OEM parts numbers some times.

Does your truck have ABS?

 

I'm pretty sure my truck does not have ABS.

I pulled the hose which was a real bitch then took it to a hydraulic shop and had the, replace the rubber where it was leaking. I ended up taking it to another shop to get it pit on since it was such a pain. Now after all that another section of hose is leaking!

I think I'm going to get the new part now.

 

I think it possibly does have ABS. I've noticed that the power steering pump makes more noise when I break. Did they make a 1991 pickup with ABS? How would I confirm this?

 

Well, one way is to see if you have an ABS fuse. Another to look at the rear wheels, from behind, and see if there is a wire going to them which connects to a wheel position sensor. I think ANY wires going to the wheels will mean that you have ABS actually.
Another way is to locate the ABS control module in the cab. OR, yuou can go to www.toyotapartsoverstock.com, find the part number of the control module and then check if your vin lists that.

 

So I have discovered that my truck definitely has ABS which is probably why that part is so complicated. I think I'm going to order the part and have it put on by a shop.

Anyone know of a shop in or near Austin, Texas that specializes or knows a lot about these old trucks? The shop that did the first job didn't seem to know much about it and had to research it.
