Hello everyone, I'm new to this forum, i have known about it for a while but i just got around to making an account, i had a question, i have a 1990 t4r with the 3.0L v6 i am told that all v6's come with a chain driven t-case, i want to do a set of 4.70:1 gears from either marlin or trail gear but i head the v6 requires more work and stuff i dont have time to do since this is my only daily driver. But the thing is that if i can get a hold of a 4cyl gear driven case, can i bolt it right in and just ditch the 6cly case, will this require drive shaft modifications or will it bolt right in? I do not want to do drive shaft mods or welding or any of that, would the 4cyl case be my awnser to less work? Thanks every one!!!!!

 

You will need an adapter to make the older gear case bolt up to your transmission. 4.7's go in the gear cases not the chain cases.

 

You'll have to have the older gear driven transfer case to reagear to 4.7. You'll have to get an adapter to run it, which will require the final holes to be drilled out and the unused ones sealed up. But it's basically a bolt on. A pretty involved bolt on. Then you'll have to modify your shifter assembly and get a housing that will work from a 4 cylinder automatic that originally came with a gear case. You should be able to use the same driveshafts, but not 100% sure. A driveshaft shop can lengthen or shorten a shaft for $50 or so.

 

I can't seem to get a definitive answer on this. I have a similar setup, 1993 4Runner V6 (3.4 swapped) with the 5-speed manual. I still have the chain driven case in, but have purchased a top shift case and had a friend install the 4.7 gears in it. I also have the adapter from trail gear to attach it to the tranny.

My question is if I will need to modify the crossmember or driveshafts when I swap in the gear driven case and adapter? They seem to measure pretty close. I don't have much in the way of metal fab tools at my house, so that is why I was asking before I tear into it.

 

If you already have everything why not take the weekend and find out?

 

Mine is 3.4 swap but I use the automatic from the newer 4runner. With the adapter and manual gear transfer case. I was able to reuse both stock driveshafts and crossmember is in the stock position. I did have to make a small adapter plate because the transfer case said about 6 inches further backwards. This is all with an automatic transmission however your mileage may vary. I'm on mobile right now but you can check my 3.4 swap thread and see the small adapter plate that I had to make to mount the transfer case rearward. Sorry I can't help either one of you guys specific situation.

K so what I need is the 4cyl gear driven case with whatever gears i want in it, and the adapter to run the 4cyl case with my 6cyl tranny? Is that correct? So from what I am understanding the 4cyl t-case will not mate with the 6cyl transmition, thus making the adapter plate needed?

 

Yes racer. You will need a gear case and the adapter to the 6 cylinder transmission.
