22R took a poo on me

I've got an 86 truck with a 22R that I bought as a daily driver. Has 176k on it. When I bought it, I changed carb, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, t-stat, and changed the oil. It was running perfectly for about a month and suddenly won't idle. Seems to be missing horribly and only stays on when you give it some gas. It is also smoking very badly. Tried cleaning plugs, changing the air filter, adjusting the carb, with no changes. Am I missing something here?

I had the exact same problem and my float in the carb was getting stuck. Also might be a vac leak?

The accelerator pump might be bad also! My 87' 22r had the exact same symptoms! And that's what fixed it.

Dumb question, but you don't hear any loud tapping noises during the rough idle do you?

Interesting. I'll look into accelerator pump. Doesn't seem to be tapping like lifter noise or anything. I really don't think it's a vacuum issue. Haven't had a whole lot of time to mess with it. I wouldn't think the float is stuck because the fuel bowl levels seemed okay. I'll check into that accelerator pump.

I've heard that the diaphragm in the accel. pump can rupture, causing the vacuum line to suck gas right into the engine.

Is the AAP diaphragm on the carburetor? If that's what I think it is, it is brand new, as I replaced the entire carb. What would it do if I had a bad distributor or broken timing belt?

Okay, so today I've got time to screw with this thing. Again, vac lines look okay. It decided to actually stay alive today, and I noticed the choke side of the carb is making a sucking noise. It is also idling fast and still smoking. Kind of a grey blue smoke. Missing horribly as well, the whole engine was shaking. Played with the idle screw, with no changes. Fuel bowl level seemed alright, just below the center while idling. Changed the oil, old oil was black but otherwise fine. Pulled spark plugs and they are black, which makes me think it is running way rich. I did notice oil residue on and around the top of the carb. I am attempting to post pictures as well, but having some issues as I am using my iPhone browser. 22R took a poo on me-image.jpg

Hate to bring this up again, but I really need to figure it out. Once again I have let it sit and kind of forgotten about it. But I am ready to get this thing on the road again. I just would like to get a good idea of what's going on before I start throwing parts at it. Is there any way it could be the distributor itself? Or the timing chain? I just have no idea why it refuses to run.
