Oil in Rad but not what you think

Ok so my 1995 4X4 22re pickup starting running funny on Friday. I parked it at work and later went out to see if the rad needed water. Well I started it up and took the rad cap off and what looked like a mix of chocolate milk shake and chocolate pudding starting running out of the rad.

Well I got it towed home and started looking on here to see what it might be. And well everyone says its the timing chain wore through the guide and wore a hole in the timing cover and the oil got into the coolant.

So I took the valve cover off and looked and saw the chain guide was loose so I said well that's what it has to be. So tonight me and my brother took the timing cover off and well the chain guide on the driver side is still there in one piece. Except where it bolts on the top bolt it was loose there. But the guide is there and there is no hole in the cover where the coolant is. the oil is very low and there is no coolant in the oil. So I'm thinking the gasket failed on the timing cover and the oil got in the coolant that way. What do you all think?

Not necessarily, if the oil was under more pressure than the coolant that's a one-way transfer.

Also, you didn't mention if it's an auto or stick. Auto trans ATF can get into the rad relatively easy.

depends on where the gasket is leaking.

I have seen extrnal hg leaks....steaming between head and block.

I have seen leak between water jacket and chamber...there is your smoker.

I have seen oil gallery to water passage leak...

That motor needs to come apart at this point anyways...at least the top end.

You are in head gasket shock.

Number one symptom...you dont think its the head gasket.

Its pretty obvious.

Head gasket blown to one of the return galleys will cause oil in the pan.
Head gasket blown from a pressure galley to water passage will cause oil in the rad.

Neither requires a breech in the chain area, and neither means oil or coolant gets into some area they shouldn't be.

You could try pressurizing the radiator (engine not running), and then check for coolant in the oil. But don't count on this working; you can only pressurize the coolant system so far, and the leak (where ever it is) might need the vibration of the engine and the pressure of the oil system to open. It doesn't take a big hole.
