95 toy 4runner wanting to swap out to a non comp older engine

My 95 4runner with 3.0 needs head gaskets and has almost 300,000. Miles I would like to swap it out to an older non computer engine, (I am old school and hate comp engines) is there an engine that I can do this with and wwould I need a new trans. Engine does not have to be a toyo, or is there an engine that will fit without changing the trans that will work with little to non mods.

Ford 302.

With an adapter you can bolt it in.

How would effect the dash gages and it will work with the original trans? Cause I can deal with a 302. Where can I get the adapter?

Ok thanks, will the 302one have power? My 3.0 was pretty good with its power. I love my 4runner even if its 2 wheel drive and body is in great shape, it has oil leaks and o/d light flashes sometimes but trans is good.

You would be going from a 3 liter engine to a 5 liter engine. Power output would be much better. To be honest though, and I don't mean this to be rude, do you have the knowledge and experience to do something like this? From the questions you're asking it sounds like you may be better off just finding a used engine and paying someone to swap it in for you.

Where do you live?? Many jurisdictions with strict emission regs do not permit the installation of any earlier engine in cars/trucks that are new enough to still be emissions tested.

I am not a toyota person my experance is in old british cars and keeping orgnal. Also am ex military mech. I am not into changing engines out except to replace with same, I am tired of the issues with the 3.0. So wanting to change to a different engine and the only other engine switch out I have done was a 46pit flat head to a 250 and that was a mess but that was what my boss at the time wanted and I even told him the 250foster did not have the guts for the 46 and i was right talk about a slug of a car. As this is for my personal car and I dont want to mud it or beef it up but just want another 300,000 miles out of it with out the comp that is why I ask personally I would rather have my Jaguar or any other old britsh car over the 4runnerage but it was a gift from my father before he died so would like to keep it. So thats what I meant by I am old school no comp cars and I like restoring with orignal specs

I am in for NC and as long as the car is below 96 there is no emission testing. So this is not the concern I have. Not having the experance with computered cars except minor repairs changing over to a non computer engine is new to me and I have no idea on what issues or what will work and not work. I have worked on computered cars that were limos but to be honest I hated it to many sinsors and many codes sent since wireing was lengthened and added weight and elctronis installed. I am a very pre computerrized era person and I like keeping organal to a point, beefing up rebuilding engine I can deal with and have done but never done a computerized car/truck.

Even if you swap in a non computer engine and want to keep your original trans, you still have to have a computer for it. If your wanting a 302 go with a older C6 for the trans.

I know you said you like your 4Runner, but have you considered a newer vehicle? The 96 and newer 4Runners have much better engines and are nicer looking inside and out. You would have a newer, factory installed, reliable engine for probably about the same amount of money as swapping a 302 into yours. You could also find one with 4WD.

I have thought of that but I would buy a truck or car built before the 80's. This is more a sentamental think my Dad gave this 4runnerand to me just before he died and it is the last thing I got from him and because of family issues I have never recieved anything else he left me that I was to get a family member sold everything else and never compensated me for the sale, anyways thats why I want my 4runner and just wanting to get back on the road body has No rust at all except the rear bumper. It is one of these things of fix the head gasket and replace water pump for the 5th time or spend the money on changing out the engine to something without the computer just about the same money wise, or finding a wreck and just changing engine and taking the chance that it has good head gaskets.

You've had to replace the head gaskets 5 times?

No not head gaskets, since 2004 I have had to change the water pump 5 times. If it had been the head gaskets I would of trashed engine long before now.
