So I've been restoring my 87 4Runner for what seems like an eternity and I'm nearing the home stretch. I had a saggy rear end before this all started and I've added some heavy items so it is only going to get worse.

I want to run stock height to no more than an inch higher in the rear. I've added the following:
1. 4xInnovations rear bumper....pure beefy awesomeness, but adds about 90lbs.
2. A larger spare....another 10lbs.
3. Some other gear and car seats and what not for maybe another 50lbs.

So lets call it an extra 150lbs sitting near the bumper.

I want to do the no cut version of the ZUK mod as I may someday lift it and would like to retain the bumpstops.

I was inspired by this thread. They used a 5" x 125lb spring rate and got awesome results:

I worry that because I have 150lbs of extra weight it might now work as well. But it is a big deal for me to not add any height (more than 1") above stock as this vehicle performs a fair amount of baby hauler duties.

Should I stick with the 125lb rate or move up to 150lbs? Or would another solution be to go with a 13" spring with a 100lb spring rate?

I'm being picky but I don't want to risk having a stiff ride either.

Any ideas???

 

What I used, Fox mustang rear springs. I have a heavy bumper, spare, and other stuff in the back and it handles it just fine

 

Do you know the overall height and spring rate by any chance? Did you get any lift above stock? Where the springs new or used when you got them? Did you have to cut them at all?

 

Springs were used, I had them laying around. 200 lbs per inch, not sure on exact length, also not sure on lift due to my leaf springs were flat before. I also put a set of mustang lowering springs in and it rode softer but also sat an inch lower. If you need pics of my truck to see lift let me know

 

Thanks, I'll keep that as an option....but I'm looking to go with the Black Magic springs from Southwest Speed. I'd like to go new and they are the most common source for the ZUK mod. At $75/set shipped its hard to beat.

 

Anyone have experience with the 13"x100lb spring vs the 11"x125lb spring?

 

UPDATE!!! So the restoration is 99.99% complete. The 4xInnovations bumper is on and the top is back on. Here is my review on the Black Magic 5" x 11" 125lb springs.

I'd say with a stock bumper this would absolutely be perfect to get you back to stock height. With the bumper on there it gets lowered by 0.5-1". Still looks perfect, but throw a couple people or some gear in there and it would be a little squatty.

With a heavy rear bumper or if you are frequently hauling gear....I'd go with the 13" 125lb springs. Once I put some sliders on I will be buying a set.

It looks great. Perfect stance. Did you have your truck repainted at any point? The black paint looks terrific. Do you use any special products? I suppose I could wash mine one in a while.

 

Thanks! I tore it down to its skeleton to rebuild it, so yes it has been repainted. One year ago almost exactly. Just finishing it up now. There is no wax or anything on it....once I do polish and wax it it will look like a mirror.

Your 11-inch 125-pound springs are a little low for added weight.
My 12 inch 125-pound springs are just right for stock.
13-inch, 125-pound springs would be just perfect for your load.
