2001 Tacoma won't start after rain

Hi all,

Well, the title says all. 2001 6-cyl Tacoma with 167k miles. It hasn't driven in the rain in a couple months. I started it in dry weather, started driving and it started to pour rain. I made it home okay but it did not start again after I turned off the motor. The engine compartment was dry so not sure if the rain was a factor or if it's just ironic.

Check out the video below.

The clicking noise before turning the ignition is new to me... What do you guys think?

Rain would do more than you think, I've had an alternator short out in the rain on another vehicle before.

I can't say about the clicking noise... but does your engine turn over at all? Is the battery charge good or does it seem abnormally low? Did you try jumping it? These will all help narrow the issue. My first thought that the rain shorted our the starter or alternator or something.

The battery is good, I just tested it. The truck does not crank over at all. I think the rain had an effect on something!

If it's the alternator, it should still start, correct?

If it's the starter, not sure what my next step is....

Try jumping it. Clicking could be a sign of a almost dead battery. Nothing kills them faster than cold weather. If you can jump start it. It would indicate something in you charging or starting system. Bad ground or seized starter or fried alternator. Just places to start.

Hey all, got a call from the shop...

Sounds like my alarm system was shorting out and draining my battery. They replaced the battery and disconnected my alarm. All is good now.

Thank you all for your input!
