Spare Carrier Idea...

I finally found what I want for my tire carrier idea. It may not be the cheapest wroute, but I thought it would be a good idea to have a basket and a tire carrier in one and also have it look professional. I want to get something like this:

We could probably make the basket part pretty easily but the folding part I will probably buy. Then weld a hub or mount for the spare on the bottom of the basket, so when offroad'n I can fold it up and mount the spare. Then when I'm on the road I can fold it back down for some extra storage space and put the spare back under. Though there should be plenty of clearance for the spare with the basket down too. What do you guys think? Thats just the first one I have found. It does look like it sticks out a bit, but I think my hitch is a little deeper so it wouldn't stick out at much and since I did that hitch mod, it will be a bit higher rather than lower thant the hitch cross bar. Darn, come to think of it, my mom's last car had a hitch bike carrier that I could have hacked up and had a free tire carrier... darn... hm... I THINK that went with the car... I'll have ot investigate the garage next time I'm home.

If you want, Sportsmans Guide has Larin reciver racks for $50. Why do want to put a spare there? Is there something wrong with stock or up top? Just curious.

On top it raises the center of gravity a bunch and under it lessens the departure angle...

If worried about the departure angle that the tire underneath causes, the carrier that you are showing will be 10x worse even with a offset. It will also make you vehicle a couple of feet longer.

The cage folds up... so it would only stick out a couple inches not feet. As for the hood idea... sorry guys... i'm not quite that hard core. Maybe if i had an old crusier, but not my truck.
