My stepson was offroading and probably blew hjs clutch. Maybe the tranny does nkt work anymore. How do I diagnose the tranny to see if it still works.which other tranny is a direct swap to the l52.

 

Well, you're getting no response so I'll ask some questions...

What is it doing?

It's hard to diagnose a tranny if the clutch isn't even working. Short of pulling it and taking it apart. I understand that it would suck to do a clutch job and put the tranny back in, then realize it's bad too...and have to take it out again.

Direct swap as far as 5-speeds would be an L50 or L52. Same body style truck with a 5 speed. Otherwise you're looking at some modifications to make a later model tranny fit.

 

I'll probably take it out and look at the clutch and probably put a new and Se what happens. What mods are needed to install later trannys

 

The search function here is your friend. Hundreds of people have had the same question answered.

In short, it depends on what transmission you're putting in. 84/85 had G-series trannies. Later models had W-series trannies.

Any transmission that came attached to a R-series engine (20R, 22R, 22RE) will bolt right up to any other R-series engine.

The issue is the length of the transmission. The G-series were longer, and I think the W-series are even longer still.

So basically: shorten the rear driveshaft. Lengthen the front driveshaft. Move the transmission crossmember back.

I have heard of someone having to pound the transmission tunnel in the bottom of the cab out a bit to make more space, also, but that doesn't seem to be part of the "conventional wisdom" as far as the mods needed to do the job.
