So the title says most of it. I have a 1997 4runner base manual trans with the j shifter.

I ran into my 4wd not working the other day. Below is what I have found so far.

I have traced down the wire that is not going to ground from the add relay and need the wiring diagram to see where it goes. I replaced the transfer case switch today and still had nothing engaging unless i either switch the vacuum hoses from the vsvs around or I can manually trigger the wire on the relay and all is good. I believe it is a green with red stripe wire.

Let me know if you succeed. I have always wanted one. You can always buy a one-day subscription to TIS. I can tell you there are TWO switches on the TC, passenger side does 4H and driver's does 4L. Do you have a problem on both 4h and 4L?

Thank you for the diagram! I ended up reading a tiny comment in another post that lead me to investigate a plug at the top of the transmission that wasnt connected. I took the shifter plate out of the vehicle to see where it would plug in and wouldnt you know it another connector on the top passenger side of the tranny was disconnected. I plugged that in and it started working.

Now just to verify I only saw 1 position indicator switch on my transfer case is this correct? I traced everywhere on the unit and only found 2 wires going down and they went to 1 indicator.

Any idea what the other non connected wire harness is for on the top of the tranny on the drivers side?

 

With the M/T you should have 2 plugs on your transfer case for 4wd (plus one for the vehicle speed sensor, this will be near the back of the case just in front of where the rear drive shaft attaches). The 2 4wd plugs are:

1. D3 DETECTION SW (TRANSFER 4WD POSITION). This determines whether the transfer case is in 2WD or 4WD, regardless of high vs low, and is used by the ADD circuit to activate the VSVs and illuminate the 4WD light on the dash.
2. D5 DETECTION SW (TRANSFER L4 POSITION). This determines whether the transfer case is in the High or Low range, and is used by the ECU, 4wd computer, ABS control unit, and the rear diff lock control unit (if equipped).

Keep in mind, this is just from studying the diagrams while working on my 3.4 swap with a 97 4Runner donor parts, I've never actually seen some of this stuff in person.

 

I don't know if D3 does close in 4L, but I do know that if it is disconnected the truck WILL have 4WD in low range but not high from hands on experience. It may be that all the ADD system needs is the 4L detect signal from D5.

 

As I said above, there are TWO, one on each side. Passenger side is the D3 (4WD) switch and driver is the D5 Low range switch. They are in identical positions on either side of the case but one side is much more difficult to see unless you drop the tranny.

Thanks again for all the help! We got freezing rain and about 4-5 inches of snow yesterday and the 4wd works like a charm now. In fact much better than expected.
