Changing Transmission and T-case fluid, alot of controversy what to use

So I feel like ive looked everywhere, but i am new to this.. I drive a 89 toyota pickup 22-re, manual transmission. What transmission and T-case oil should i use? ive heard GL-5 is not good but GL-4 is. Redline MT-90 75W90 GL-4 Gear Oil i hear works wonders and im almost sold. But then i run into controversy on the T-case. Ive heard you should use GL-5 instead, then ive heard you can use the same as the transmission. I want to get them both out of the way this week. What does Toyota recommend? its not specified in the Haynes manual and this stuff isn't cheap enough to make a mistake. Any help is appreciated.

I swapped to Redline MT-90 in both my trans and transfer case a couple months ago (read: sometime in the past year) It really helped my transmission. I don't know what the previous owner had in there (other than it was way way way overfilled), but my truck shifts a lot smoother now than it did before the fluid swap.

Idk about your transfer, since mine is a gear-driven and not a chain-driven model, but it helped out there too.

Owners manual specs GL4/5 in trans and transfer. I dumped in MT90 GL4 in both this past summer. Run the same in both, then, should they somehow swap fluid, it won't matter. Had some oldass GL5 in both, much better with the new GL4. Even cold, (been about 25 for a high and -12 the other night) it shifts great.

You can pick up a hand pump for the quart sized bottles. It's like 5 or 6 bucks I think and well worth it.

I run Reline MT-90 in both my trans and transfer case. The transfer case has no problems with the GL-4 and it's just easier to keep them both the same so as to eliminate confusion and multiple fluids as much as possible.

You can also fill through the shifter, just remove the fill plug and have someone under the truck ,while your pouring the fluid in, to tell you it's full. The hand pumps are nice but I can remove my shifter boot and shifter pretty quick and it's faster and easier than hand pumping 4+ quarts under a truck

You can. I did that last summer when I replaced my transmission since the shifter wasn't in yet anyway, but I also cut the crap out of my hand on the sheet metal while putting the bolts back in so I don't like to suggest that to other people. lol

You don't have to pull the entire shifter base off, just the shifter itself

gl5 is safe for everything these days, if you go to the local flaps, they probably won't even have gl4.

I have a new marlin crawler trans, they'll tell you to run whatever.

save the expensive stuff for the trans only, cheap gear oil in everything else.

I prefer GL4 in the trans. Currently I'm just running cheap non synthetic stuff but it shifts a lot better than with more expensive GL5 like mobile1.

Gl4 or Gl5 in the transfercase. Doesn't matter.

Doing this via hand pump SUCKS, I recommend doing the shifter fill method.

I know this is an old thread but I do have a related question.

I am having to replace the seal on the tcase selector. The fill plug seems jammed on pretty good. I plan on darning the tcase and the refilling thought the tcase selector.

Can anybody tell me what the capacity is for fluid in the tcase?
