truck sucks in tahoe- difficulty running at altitude

My trucks runs great in vacaville but when i drive to tahoe its hard to start.

just what are you driving???

It does not start??

Is it a no crank condition ??

Does it crank but not start??

A little better idea of what you have done lately to fix this issue??

It only goes avout 45 up donner pass. Once its cold and i try to start, it turns over but i have to crank it for a while.. I had to turn up the idle because it would just die out...

There is a device on the 22re (can remember where it's at right now) that helps adjust the fuel mix at altitude, could be it's not doing it's thing anymore... Stohiciometry is a cruel mistress.

What was the weather like and temperature like??

I am betting that open element air filter might have a lot to do with this issue.

I have had them freeze and ice up when the temperature is like 35 to 28 Degrees F from the moisture in the Air.

In a snow storm I have seen them freeze completely solid cutting off all the air to the engine.

Learned my lesson real quick on that one!!

Here, let me help things out here. Don't be so hard on him.

Vacaville is on the valley floor, about 100 ft. Average temp during the day is around 65 this time of year. Overnight lows in the mid 40's.
Tahoe is at 6500 ft, 7000 ft at Donner pass. Average temp during the day is around 30, with overnights in the teens. Some snow.

Most likely the cold start injector. Not enough fuel to keep it running, at least that is what it sounds like to me.

And skskatelife, you have a 4-cylinder engine. You're not going to be flying up the pass by any means. Even with the V6, I had to do some performance mods before I could keep a consistent 65-70 up the whole way. With the 22RE, I don't think that's even possible.

I doubt it's the cold start injector; that injector is never on once you let go of the key. In addition to starting problems, he can't get the speed he wants up Donner Pass. And the engine is fully warmed up there.

The only device that affects fuel mixture, that I know of, is the O2 sensor. That inherently "adjusts for altitude."

This sounds like a plain ole tune up problem to me. Check the timing, replace the plugs and air cleaner, inspect the vacuum lines. Don't forget to check for stored codes; easy to do.

I don't know much about the climbing ability of the 22re, but my 3VZE hikes me up that hill on a regular basis with no problem. Bone stock.

Wouldn't the main contributor to the problem be the altitude? Agree with the tune up/ 02 sensor if you haven't already done one OP.

Low fuel pressure, fuel filter, fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator or FP VSV stuck.


Vacuum leak somewhere.


Could try jumping FP and B+ on the diag port just before start to give it time to pressure up.

Xlean air filter? Recent turn up? Just buy it? Etc

awesome glad to see someone can get rid of those unnecessary remarks.

on a side note is their a way to test the range of the o2 sensor at that altitude and see if its just an out of range for a reading that the ecm can identify ???
