94 Toy truck.4x4.This has the 22re in it.Got some miles on it 285,000 so took it out and rebuilt it.New rod and main bearings.New timing chain guides gaskets water pump.The whole works.Timing chain cover was good so just inspected by the machinist that redid the head.
Put it all together and started it up.Wanted it to run a couple minutes make sure I did everything right.Started up and ran great so I set the timing and shut it down.Got everything else buttoned up on it.Put all the vacuum lines on that I could find on my pictures I took before I did this.And all that I could find on the web.Filled it with water and started it back up.Now the thing is running ragged like avacuum leak.Checked everywhere by spraying carb cleaner all over the manifold see if it would bog down.No where can I find a leak.Thinking maybe I have a vacuum line somewhere its not supposed to be.

But my big worry is looks like I have water in the oil.I know the head is great it was done by a machine shop that checked everything out on it.And he said the timing chain cover was good.Where is the water coming from.Its not the real nasty looking milkshake junk but its still not all oil on the dipstick.

Compression test time

 

Sometime there will be residual water after a head gasket run it for a bit then change the oil. If you are really worried you can do a compression test. Also you can do a cooling system test. There is a write up on here with a bike pump rigged to the overflow dump tube. You don't need to give it much pressure. Then just wait in see.

Okay.Thanks for the response.Happy Thankgiving everyone.Its not smoking or knocking but just seen the oil and got worried about this.What is a compression check on it going to show me ?I know the head is good I put it in the shop.I will work on the truck when I get some free time but dont know what else I can do.I followed the vacuum diagrams on the hood and on Autozones web site and they are all different here and there.None of them are exactly the same.It was running and idling great before I hooked up the ones in the back and put the water in it.Im sure I can find the vacuum problem but worried about the water.Thanks again.

 

It sounds like you ran the engine for several minutes without water in the cooling system. I have never done the same myself, but I think there is a good chance that you warped the head. It does not take long.

 

Compression test will tell you if you have compression. Not sure if a quick run will warp a head but the test will let you know.


I'd follow Toyotas diagram under the hood... They are the ones who designed the engine and its systems. Besides if you have smog inspections it will fail if their all hooked up wrong.

 

A quick run, like, start her up and turn it off, no. Running it long enough to set timing is a different story.

 

I agree with Strumcrow - when you set timing the motor is supposed to be warmed up I believe - and if it's *that* warmed up, it should have had coolant in it at that point - otherwise, risk warping the head.

If your head is warped, you will fail a compression test. If your head is not warped, but, say, you had crap in your block's holes for the head studs, you could leak from the head gasket because you didn't get a correct torque reading when you tightened down the head bolt in dirty holes.
