What Transmission Fits

Hey all, I've searched and can't find a definitive answer so here it goes: I have a 89 pickup 22re 4x4. I have been searching my local craigslist for used transmissions and transfer cases. I know most of them post 83 are 25.5 inches long. I believe mine is a w-56 21 spline. My question is will any post 83 transmission bolt up to my 22re with little modification? I know there are multiple transmission codes for the same years. Any clarification would be greatly appreciated.

The easiest way I know of is the shift pattern on a w56 the shifters will touch (or almost touch) in 2hi and reverse on a
G52 its 4low and 2nd. No idea about a g54 or if the pattern of a w56 was different between the types (type a, b,c, d)

Check Marlins site for transmission bible. It doesn't tell you exactly how to identify it unless you look at front bearing numbers I believe. So far as I know, there isn't a real easy way to identify them externally.

Checked marlins site it has allot of great info. Thats how I found there were tons of transmissions in toyotas! I just want to get mine replaced I'm tired of grinding third gear and no speedo (speedo gear lasts a day) but I don't have the cash for marlins new units, pickings are slim in Tucson.

The G series are basically early W series from what I can gather. Anything that was behind a 22R or RE will bolt up. The differences being top shift transfer case or forward shift transfer case (which would tell you where it may need a shifter hole opened up in the floor); and wheelbase, which would only affect driveline lengths.

If that trans is an 85 and was originally behind that 22RE, it should be a W56A.

Dependent on build date and engine also... It could be either a G52 or G54...

Any of the ones behind a 22r/re will probably bolt up but there's a lot of other parts you need
