Converting 82 2wd to 4wd- easier than I thought?

Hello,

So I have the opportunity to buy a G52 trans mated to a forward shift transfer case.

The guy said he has done 2wd to 4wd swaps...

He said I didn't have to cut the entire front end off, rather, I needed to weld brackets for the springs, fit the 4wd gearbox, and some other minor things, and I can put an axle under it, and I'd be ready to go. He said I should be able to use the same shock towers and everything.

I don't have a 4x4 in front of me to check measurements.

Is it possible? all I need to do is weld on the spring retainers and some minor pieces on the front end, and put an axle under it? Bolt the G52 w/ transfer case to the motor, have the rear driveshaft shortened, and put a front driveshaft from the transfer case to the front axle?

I guess it just depends on your skill level.

It seems with me it is always the little things that cause grief.

Like getting the steering gear in stupid things like that.

So your pretty much doing a SAS and adding a transmission and transfer case.

Then your front axle has 6 lugs and your back has 5

Me I would just get another truck.

Doing this gets old after 30 plus years.

Get a 4wd crossmember
Cut off everything below that hangs below frame
Cut tbars
Unbolt upper control arms
Cut out tranny crossmember* (leave mount for ebrake if you want)
Make brackets for new crossmember or weld on like I did
Weld spring hangars flush with front of the frame
Cut hole in center of cab mount *
Weld in shackle tubes (without bushings in i couldnt get mine out, thought whats the worst that could happen, when the bushing catches fire and you throw a cup of water on it some of the water grts on your drop light thats been on for about 9 hours straight leaving you without much light and glass all over ground, just sayin)
bolt everything together
Finishing touchs and steering and your golden

* = easier said than done
I highly recommend a torch, a paved driveway, and a neighbor that wears pants that fit. Trust me the first time it was like hey girl but believe me after about the thousandth time of seeing some leather bag with more crack than the local drug dealer gets old relativly fast
