I just finished putting in a new clutch. Noticed that my oil pan has been leaking. anyone know how much it would be to have a mechanic install the new FIPG gasket? my back still hurts from the laying on my back for two days.

 

It's a PITA, so I'm guessing not cheap. The biggest PITA is getting the OLD FIPG off~

2wd or 4wd?

 

TNRabbit, its a 4wd manual. I've seen some threads that say it can be done without removing the front diff...just loosen the bolts slide it forward and then turn it 45 degrees left...go to the back and hit it with a mallet...and it's out. Anyone else been able to make that happen? Sounds like a bit of bs to me.

 

I have no idea how anyone would be able to do it that way. I had to drop the diff on mine and take the pan out the front. 3vze 4x4 manual

 

You actually have to CUT the pan off if it was installed correctly. Piano wire works best.

 

Ok, it sounds like no one has done this without removing or at least lowering the front differential.

By any chance does anyone have a pic of what this looks like when the differential and cross member are dropped down. That would be a huge time saver in trying to recognize which bolts to take out and which ones to leave attached. I think i'll start by cleaning the engine really well this weekend. do the gasket first weekend in June. thanks for the help.

 

TNrabbit, Enlighten us on how you use piano wire? I've had my oil pan off twice, and have to take it back off a third time. I'm trying to visualize how it would work and not get caught on the baffle in between the block and the oil pan? Do you start on the front or back of the pan?

 

I still have the diff out of mine. I should be able to get some decent pics for you tomorrow night. If you want anything specific let me know. I didn't touch my cross member but I did remove the relay rod for the steering which requires a ball joint seperator. Preferably a screw type seperator which no one in my neck of the woods had. I was able to do it with a fork style without messing up the rubber bits.

 

I actually have a screw type ball joint separator. If you could post a photo from the front showing everything taken apart that would be really helpful.
