Crawler + Auto tranny?

Could someone explain why you couldn't use dual transfer cases with an automatic tranny?

i'm not sure about the new auto trannies(believe it has a detachable t-case), but i know that on mini trucks and older 4runners, the transfer case was integral to the transmission

So, when someone puts in a second transfercase (on an older 1st or 2nd gen), does it typically go after the stock transfercase, or in between the transmisson and the stock t-case?

Yeah, I'm wondering the same thing, because there's definitely times where it would be beneficial to have a crawler whre I wheel.

In the case of a truck or 4Runner with a gear driven t-case, the second case is usually added after the existing one. Unless both are the same in which case it doesn't matter. In the case of automatics or chain driven cases, the existing case is discarded and two gear-driven cases are installed in its place. This setup requires two adapters, one after the transmission and one between the cases. There is a third possibility and that is the addition of a complete gear-driven case with the OTT divorced adapter behind any other case.

So... you can have a dual T-case setup with an auto, assuming you can get the proper adaptors. I'm specifically wondering about a 2nd gen. 3.0 automatic.

And I'm wondering for a 1997 4runner auto with the 3.4 liter?

I've read somewhere that if you go too low with the auto + crawler...you won't be able to stop.

You'd have to pop it in neutral/park so you can stop moving.
(might be an old wives-tale though...)

The best person to talk to about this is the man himself, Marlin. As for installing a crawl box on a 3rd gen auto, yes it can be done.

There's a few manual 5 speeds around that won't stop (kill the engine) in "Grandma" but I have no problem what-so-ever in 1st gear, low range and crawler engaged (308:1 figuring in the torque converter) in the Tundra.

Hey Joe!

BTW thanks for the axles! They're great spares......

Hows your ride doing? I like the way Marlin installed the Twin Stick assy. When I was at his shop last December, he showed me how to do it. I ended up getting a crawl box before I left

Easy.

On the new trucks it should be an MC09.

Marlin has an adaptor to get a gear drive t-case behind the A340F, then just another dual case adaptor to get another gear drive case.

Purely by the numbers, a dual Ultimate A340F will be at 158.8:1 but that does not count a factor of 2 for the torque convertor.

On the old junk, you have to use a new tranny to get a separate tranny and t-case. At that point, you are half way to a 3.4 swap which sounds like a good idea.

If I had a new truck and was intent on wheeling it, I would sure wait on the crawler until the axle swap so I could use gear drive cases and passenger side outputs.

Mine won't stop. Stand on the brakes hard and it just keeps right on going ½mph

So far so good. The only breakage I've experienced was the right hub - the fusion ring shattered on Moab's lower proving ground but that didn't stop the beast from finishing that little section of fun. We'll see how everything fares in Johnson Valley. :wtf:
