Hi all, new to the site. I've got a auto '92 Toyota pickup 3vze 4x4 with a wobbly floor shifter.
I know it's the shaft bushings, what I need is a step by step explanation on how to install these new bushings if someone would be so kind.
There's a bazzillion threads on this, even a YouTube video, but none that apply to my situation, 4x4. I've gotten to the point where I've unbolted the floor plate, but it doesn't just pull up as I've read in anothe post.
1. Do I need to disconnect the linkage to the 4x4 and the auto trans to be able to pull everything out of the floor, or can I replace the bushings without having to pull the whole assembly out of the floor?
2. There is a rubber boot on the bottom of the floor plate, how do I remove this, and do I need to remove the entire rubber boot?
3. What's the trick to removing the overdrive button wires, is it necessary to remove this?

Thanks for the link, a couple questions. How did u get the rubber boot off the bottom, tear/cut it? And I'm guessing this can't be done with the shifter assembly still in the vehicle, ie. just lifting it a little?

This isn't my post or instructions.

I mentioned above I think it can be done on the vehicle, but I don't have ham fists so I can get to some of the tighter spaces.

He says the first step is to disconnect it from the transmission. Soo yeah it needs to come all the way out.

Boots are just friction fit around the plate usually, but there might be screws coming up from the bottom holding the top plate to the bottom plate which also hold the boot on.

I don't recall ever seeing a boot on an A/T, no point in a boot when it's behind the big shift indicator plate, if it's just a little dust boot it likely stays with the indicator plate.

 

Oh ok, the rubber boot I'm talking about is actually under the shift assembly, the linkage passes thru it underneath the truck. It's actually attached to the floor plate with rubber grommets that you can't remove from what it seems.

 

Oh the gasket stuff? Should come up with the upper plate.

I couldn't figure out why it had, what looked to be, two plates in the diagrams.

Just tug at it gently or get a corner started, it's likely glued in with road grime

 

Yeah, the gasket, my fault I was saying rubber boot. The gasket is not only stuck to the floor with road grime, lol, which I already pried up, but it's attached to the floor plate assembly, as seen in your pic, at the bolt holes. I guess you just work the rubber washer thru the bolt hole to take it off of the bottom of the shift assembly?

 

We have failure to communicate, someone wanna help.

The gasket stays on the shifter assembly.

If you can put up a picture or two of what has you stuck this might go faster.

 

Lol, yeah tuff to explain. Yeah it appears that the gasket stays on the shift assembly. But in my case I will then have to remove it to replace the bushings.

 

So very frustrating I can't figure this out. Can't figure out a way to disconnect 4 wheel drive linkage from 4 wheel drive shifter to be able to pull console out of floor to replace bushings! Uuuggghhh !!!!

 

I've just let mine be wobbly, seems like too much work, but maybe one day I'll sit down and do it

 

You disconnect the 4wd stick linkage from underneath

 

Ok so I can figure out where to disconnect the linkage, if I unhook both the trans and the transfer case linkage under the truck, there is about 12" of curved rod that I would have to pull out up through the floor. With the way both rods bend in different directions am I going to even be able to pull it up through the floor, and if I can am I going to be able to get it back down through the floor as they both bend in different directions? Keep in mind my transfer case and trans haven't been dropped, if they were dropped it would be a piece of cake. I'm a little leary of pulling the shift assembly out and not being able to get it back in. I can see how it would be a piece of cake if it was a 2wd vehicle.
I stopped at the dealer and they had no guidance they could offer, no step by step right up. He said if one of their techs would do it they would just be going in blind like me.

 

So, can I pull this thing out without dropping the transfer case, I'm about to try???

 

Take some pics and post them while you're in there, to help make sure everything gets back in right and so I can see how to do it if it works

Got it out!!!!!!!

 

Not sure if I should add some grease around the new bushings to help them out, last longer? It's a tight fit. Or silicone spray?

 

Well I just ended up putting it back together, no grease. Im thinking maybe I should have, seems like those bushings will be chewed up in no time. The shifter is tight as new now, real nice.
