97 T4R limited 4wd (*EDIT* 251,000 miles). Recently had upper and lower ball joints replaced, new steering rack bushings, tires rotated and balanced (hub centric) and a 4 wheel alignment. Shock replaced about two years ago. All this made a HUGE improvement in ride quality and handling, but there still seems to be a worrisome little wobble or shake in the front end. It's worse when hitting small bumps (like the transition between road and bridge), but I can often feel it just driving on smooth surfaced roads. I have no idea what to try next. Any advice is much appreciated.

 

So what other steering or suspension-related parts have been replaced in the last 50,000 miles?

 

Just tires and shocks/struts. I've been planning to replace the front and back swaybar bushings and end links. What else should I look into replacing?

Tie rods?

 

Loose motor mount?
Loose transmission mount?
Driveline vibration?

 

I had the rest of the front suspension inspected when I had the ball joints replaced (by my trusted local mechanic) and was told it's all good, but I know problems aren't always apparent until the part is removed an inspected.

As Habanero suggested, the tie rods do have 250,000+ miles on them, so as a safety issue, I think that's a good place to continue.

The mounts might be another thing--I've noticed a low-frequency pulsing vibration, especially after cold starts, for a few years, but haven't been able to track it down. The shaking feels like it's coming from the front suspension. This morning it felt like it was mostly on the driver's side and I can feel it slightly through the steering wheel. Thanks for the suggestion rworegon.

^^^Thanks for the reminder, I read that a while ago, but forgot about it. I also remember reading that simply tightening/adjusting the existing rack guide might do it. I'll give it a try this weekend and let you know if it makes a difference. I like cheap, effective repairs!
