Is Mobil 3309 ok???

I can't seem to find a definitive answer so here is my question. Did a tranny drain and fill on my 2000 4runner sr5 3.4L. I used Mobil 3309 to top it back up.

Is this fluid ok for my tranny?????

Thanks!

I picked it up from canadian tire. On the label it states it good for toyotas but after putting it in I couldn't find anything on the jug that said it was equivalent to dextron III. So I got a little worried.

Mobil 3309 is what I planned to flush and fill my truck with, but I keep finding a lot of conflicting information. It ranges from "it's not compatible with Dex-III" to "is is, but will affect shifting" to "Toyota specifies it over Dex-III now."

It's also Dexron, BTW, not Dextron. I used to call it Dextron myself, probably because it's easier to say.

I'm finding the same sort of conflicting statements. We need an expert to weigh in or someone that has been using 3309 in their Toyota to provide their experiences.

Hmmm..... Dexron and not dextron. Wonder how many people have been secretly laughing at me. Thanks for correction.

Mobil ATF 3309 is recommended for use in transmissions made by Aisin AW requiring fluids approved against JWS 3309 or GM 9986195.

It is also recommended for service fill applications where Toyota T-IV, T4, T-III or T3 are called for. Please refer to the owners’ manual for proper fluid requirements.
http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/...ATF_3309.aspx#

T-III/T3 = D III or Dexron III

T-III/T3/D III/Dexron III ≠ T or T-II/T2 or T-IV/T4 (or WS)

EDIT: Just now noticed Toyota also mistakenly spelled it Dextron(later corrected).

I've been through the previous post a bunch of times and can't say it clarifies things for me. Could someone maybe explain it. Or maybe just answer the original question of if Mobil 3309 is ok? Thanks!

You should be good with that Mobile 3309 ATF or any dexron lll fluid should be good.

Toyota says that their automatic transmissions that specify DEXRON-II OR III must use DEXRON-II OR III ONLY! In other words, they don't recommend that you use ANY other type of ATF(not even another T-type ATF, or WS*).

Is it o.k. to use Mobil 3309 instead of Dexron III?

Define o.k..

According to Toyota? Or Mobil? Or who?

*WS refers to Toyota ATF WS(World Standard). Which is a fully synthetic ATF and is also non-interchangeable(NOT USABLE) with other Toyota ATF types(including T-III/T3/D III/Dexron III).

Well I'm just wondering since I've got about 3 liters of the stuff in my tranny right now is that ok? Or should I be doing a flush now?

After calling Toyota and Mobil, speaking with techs and not getting a yes or no I'm currently draining my tranny. Only way I can rest easy.

I wasn't trying to overly influence your decision on what ATF to use. Only to provide you with the facts.

But, just so you know, I would do the exact same thing. I actually have a GM 4T60-E automatic transmission(in my other vehicle) that specifies Dexron III only. So it gets Dexron III only(or equivalent, and not a "universal" type ATF...like Mobil 3309). Though I might use Dexron VI, if I could afford it. Since it's OFFICIALLY back-compatible, and/or miscible, with all previous Dexron ATFs(D,D II, and D III).

So what difference does it really make which ATF you use? Probably not a whole lot when all's said and done. They're most likely all similar enough to work fairly similarly wherever you use them. I just like to play it safe when it comes to the fluid/lubricant for such a critical component on my vehicles. Call it what you will...
