transmission trouble...SOS!

Hey guys,

Here is what is going on. I have a 98 4runner with a v6 and the 5spd manual. I was driving in 5th gear and I went to shift down and it was stuck. I had to stop for a light and I finally was able to shift out of gear into what I thought was neutral. Unfortunately that transmission itself is still in 5th gear while the shift lever is still in the neutral position.

Here are some more details:

- I can start the truck with the clutch to the floor and as soon as I let it out the truck stalls
- I can shift the transfer case into neutral, let out the clutch and hear a faint squeal and not stall
- both the shifter seat bushings are still intact
- the clutch was intermittently slipping prior to the incident, only when accelerating hard in gears 2,3,4
- the trans has not grinded or made any other noises than the faint squeal when the tcase is in neutral with the clutch to the floor

Time as always is of the essence. Any help would be appreciated. I am doing a clutch this week, I just wonder what your thoughts are on the trans. I wash thinking the shift fork is broken and was going to order one as a precaution.

What do you all think? Ideally I would order a rebuilt trans and call it a day but marlin crawler has a 3 week delay.

Thanks for all the help and happy new year!

So how do you know it's in 5th gear when the shifter moves to N again?

I am just assuming it is stuck in 5th since that was the last gear I was in and I can't get drive it from a standstill. I don't know for certain just my best guess.

I'd drop the tranny and replace the clutch with Aisin kit for starters.

Does it sound like a broken shift fork?

I actually already replaced that bracket about a year ago. The first thing I'm doing when I get back from leave tomorrow is dropping the granny's and replacing the clutch. It still doesn't add up why it is stuck in gear but still rolls with the clutch down. Hopefully it will become more clear when the truck is apart. Thanks for the help.

Ok so here is an update, can anyone help me out.

I got a used transmission with less than 10K on the clock and swapped it in along with a new clutch, flywheel, bearings etc... and I went to start it up and the new transmission is also stuck in gear with the shifter in the neutral position.

I dont want to believe that 2 transmissions have the exact same problem with them but there always is that possibility with salvaged parts.

I did reuse the shifter itself, and Ive been told that the shifter can wear out on the bottom and not seat properly. The plastic bushings on the shifter and the seat inside the transmission are in good shape, and the new transmission was overall in great shape when I looked it over.

Can anyone help me with this? The new clutch works perfectly so I know that is isnt clutch related. Thanks again, and any help would be greatly appreciated.

As far as I can tell, the new transmission is stuck in a lower gear, maybe 2nd or 3rd. I can feather the clutch and roll forward but the shifter itself is in the neutral position.
