ultimate front toy axle

What would be the ultimate toyota front axle using an '85 8" housing and knuckles. I found one close to me and was mabe going to buy it and build it for a SAS in a few summers. I am just trying to see what i should do to it?

I was thinking of:
- ARB air locker
- 4.88 gears
- a high pinion third case? is that possible?

I have know clue as for what inner and outer axle shafts to use. I would also use the stock toy hubs if that makes a difference.
Thanks

Ultimate Bling:
Stock high pinion 4.10's
Spool
300M inners
Appropriate *field
5th stud in the steering arm
More, beefier studs for hubs

More realistic:
High pinion 5.29's
ARB
4340 inners from Poly Performance
Appropriate *field

I started a thread on ODW several months ago that had some good info. I may search it, we shall see.

HP third member from an fj-80 will fit in the 85 housing.

Technically 4.10's would be stronger than the 4.88's, but that would only become a factore if you are really "getting it".

Other than that, molly shafts and either longs/pros/smurfs for the birfield replacements, and you are pretty much set.

Bare and used should be 2 bills or so.

New with an ARB and V-6 gears should be $1400 or so.

there's no difference between a HP axle housing and a standard axle housing. either that, or you're thinking of the third member. the high pinion is definitely nice...it's just pricey

High pinion is stronger since it is reverse cut and powers on the drive side of the gears.

It also gets your front shaft up and out of the rocks.

It improves driveshaft angle.

When the swap comes, I will go high pinion.

I think if I were to build an "ultimate" Toyota front axle, I'd start with Brian Ellinger's housing. Make it ~61" wide (to complement my wider than stock rear) and order a few extra sets of inner axles. Then it would be a high pinion diff with 4.10 gears and an ARB. Longfields of course for outers. Total cost: ~$2000 + spares. Actually not a bad deal.

if I was to build the ultimate front end for my Toyota (I know that's not quite what you asked....)
Dana 60 shortened to 64" WMS - WMS, 4.10 gears with ARB locker, 35 spline inners and outers, pinion rotated up 15 degrees, custom drive flanges, Crane diff covers, calipers ground for 15" wheels.

Oh yeah, that what I'm just finishing building.

I saw someone post the idea of a 5th bolt on the steering arm for the hysteer. I wish I'd had that idea before! I had a lot of trouble with the steering arm studs, nuts, bolts coming loose or breaking.

Yep, over and over and over again. I broke the front bolts off twice. They'd come loose every 100 or so miles. I tried all sorts of thread locker, new studs, bolts, even changed knuckles. This is a common problem, especially with larger tires and lots of back spacing. There is a LOT of stress on these and the cone washers just kept working the studs or bolts out. I had to carry a wrench and socket around all set up for tightening these down. I missed out on several trips as a result of these.

One Sunday morning, I drove the over the Cayuse Pass to Little Naches to run the Naches trail. About an hour into the trail, the studs came loose again, actually stripping the threads out of the knuckle. Luckily I was at a point where I could hop on an escape route and drive home 100+ miles of snowy mountain passes with only 3 bots holding the steering arm in place...
