Hey guys, i got an 84 reg cab early model 22r. Im looking at the prices of a new manual streering box vs. installing power steering. Pretty much for an extra 200 bux i can have power steering. But im wondering if it would be worth it, I currently run 33's and they rub at the very tightest or turns. but around town its ok. i plan on doing a 4 inch lift and some 35's. Which will hold up better? Manual, or power steering?

 

It comes down to what you like.

Will anyone else ever need to drive your truck.

i had a 83 with manual steering as long as you never needed to do like parallel parking on a busy street .

At the time I had a 115 pound girl friend that was unable to turn the wheel if the truck was stopped. She was also unable to carry two 5 gallon buckets of water . So I traded up to something stronger.

But you get my point!!

 

adding power steering is pretty much bolt on stuff..nothing to lose, lots to gain...

 

You gonna do a 3" lift for those planned 35's?
If so spent the extra $$$ and convert to high steer with an IFS steering box...night and day difference over the stock push pull 84 steering...

 

yes i plan to do a lift before i get the tires. Id love to do power steering, but now that i look at it idk where to fit everything because my truck also has a/c. i might need to do some fabrication

 

AFAIK the a/c should be mounted below the intake, on the passenger side.
the power steering pump bolts on below the dist, on the driver side.
unless you have aftermarket a/c there shouldnt be a problem.

what i would do is find a used pump, brackets and hoses etc from someone parting there truck out. Here on the west coast of canada that can be had for $50-100.
then i would save my pennies for a ifs box and high steer and install that when you lift it.

driving a lifted truck with stock push pull steering box isnt fun.
