Well my trusty steed may have come to the end of its life. Now sitting at 430,000 kms. It is no longer a 4 wheel drive vehicle as only the front wheels will now drive under power. And it makes one heck of a clucnk when engaging the 4wheel drive option.

 

I would not be so quick to judge it, that is only ~260k miles which is not much at all. I know of a few trucks with well over 300k miles and still going strong.

First figure out why it won't go into 4wd. My truck had a real hard time going into 4wd when I had the wrong fluid in the diffs.

Try jacking up all 4 wheels and then play with getting it into 4wd and see what the problem is. Try spinning various tires to get it to go in.

Got to figure out the problem before you can decide on a solution.

 

Well it is in the shop now, for a diagnosis, but it is not 4 wheel drive that is the problem, it is not working in regular 2wheel (rear) drive.

 

Think of the smokey, front wheel drive burnouts you could do!

Well back from the shop and I am not going to fix it. It is time to say goodbye to it. I bought this limited model in Oct 97 and it never cost me a penny until about 3 years ago. I'll be sad to see it go, but I just have no money to put into it. I am going to put the stock stero system back in and then sell it as is. SOmeone who wants to work on it will be getting a truck that is in pretty good shape other wise.
The good:

I recently had the wheels sandblasted and refinished on both sides with new All Terrain tires.
2 1/2" SS mandrel bent exhaust. Cat back.
Leather has no rips anywhere.
Almost new battery.
New starter
Rear differentiial housing was replaced a few years ago, not the gears, just the casing.
Alarm
remote start

 

So what was the problem?

 

Something let go in the rear end. Possibly a broken axle as well as one wheel seems to spin freely.

 

If it is just the rear end that is not that hard or expensive to fix. You can get junkyard rear ends for under $500 usually. If you can do your own work it is not that hard, just some semi-heavy lifting.

If you are gonna be selling it whoever buys it won't have that big of a job in front of them.

If it is just an axle that is a cheap fix, should only be around $500 to have that fixed. I was quoted under that to install new gears which is more work.

 

$500 was the limit of what I was prepared to pay. Sometimes, you just have to move on. I am sad about it as it has been the best vehicle I ever owned, and it served me well with virtually no repairs for the first 350k km's. But it was going to be sold at the end of the winter anyway. I was just letting my daughter drive it for the winter so that she would have access to 4WD if she needed it. Today, I pulled the old Ford Ranger out of storage for her to drive. As for me, I have a 2006 ltd that I picked up recently.

Quitter..Sounds like your making excuses to me. I would have fixed it. $500 is cheaper then buying somthin else thats a POS and spending even more on it to keep running.
In my opinion thats like scraping a car cause it has a flat tire. My wheelin rig has 250,000 miles on it.

I sold a rear axle to a guy for 20, he should still have it. Post the truck on www.sontt.com im sure someone will buy it.

 

Another way to look at it is I can pretty much guaranty you that you will get your money back fixing the issue before trying to sell it. You will open up your potential buyer market by a LOT.

But if you were planning on selling it anyways and/or can't do the work yourself, then go ahead and sell it as is.
