So the smog shop guy said i need a valve adjustment cus its running rough and is in the high 300s in carbon. And it sounds like i need to do it warm or hot is that true, and i need to know the specs and were to put my cylinders when i do the adjustment, and any tips would be nice thanks

 

Bring engine to operating temp (driving regularly for 10-15 minutes)
Shut it off.
Remove valve cover.
Remove spark plugs (makes this a lot easier)
With a 19mm or 3/4" socket on a socket wrench, turn the crank so the #1 piston is at TDC on the compression stroke. The timing mark on the crank pulley should be at "0". Both of the #1 (closest to the front) valve rockers should be loose. If they are not, turn it the crank 360* so they are.
With a 12mm BOXED END wrench, a flat-head screw driver and a feeler gauge with .008" and .012", adjust the #1 and #2 INTAKE valves to .008" or slightly tighter. Then adjust the #1 and#3 exhaust valve to .012, or slightly tighter. Using the boxed end wrench, just loosen the lock nut enough so you can turn the little screw in it. Adjust to the proper spec, then tighten it. It helps to keep a hand on the wrench on the lock-nut.
After adjusting those 4 valves, turn the crank 360* so the #2 exhaust, #3 intake and both #4 valves are loose. Repeat adjusting procedure, put everything back together. Done.

well all of the valves needed adjusting so i adjusted them but now i hear a tinny ticking do yota motors hav a natural knocking sound, its not bad but i sounds like a quite diesel

 

I still get a ticking noise at idle. Not as loud as before the valve adjustment though.

 

So, do we have to live with the ticking, or is there a method of dealing with this? Would slightly tighter help this? Thanks.

 

I've heard some people adjusting intake to 0.07 and exhaust to 0.11 to eliminate tick.

 

These motors naturally tick. Yes, people have often tightened them to .007 and .011 with success, thats why I said "slightly tighter".

 

yeah it was bad so i rechecked them and found a loos one and tighten it and now its real little, but it sounds like its normal i just wanted to make sure and the .007 and .011 are when the motors cold hot is 8 and 12

 

Always adjust them when hot.

 

just wondering but whats the theory behind that cus cant u adjust them to a different spec when cold
