The infamous 22re ticking question

I know its normal for the 22re to have a ticking noise at start up. However, I have noticed mine is lasting a little longer than normal. In the past it would tick until the engine warmed up then it was gone. Now it goes away after a certain about of time (2-3 minutes) rather than the engine being warm. Is this just the first sign that the valves need to be adjusted? THX

When was the last time you adjusted the valves?? And the noise I hear I have been told it is the chain tensioner for the timing chain.

Valves have not been adjusted in about 30-40K. I should not have any problems with my timing chain at all. I have a LCE double chain on mine and it only has about 30K on it. I have never heard of double chain failing.

Not saying your chain is the Issue I know on mine when I cold start lots of ticking and slapping goes on until everything gets its oil, but I have 200grand on my motor so I have heard this is normal. I would imagine after 30k a valve adjustment wouldn't hurt.

This new thread had a couple posts on the tensioner

Not trying to hijack the post, but what does anybody have to say about no ticking on a cold start, but ticking on a warm start? Mine will do this sometimes.

For me? Yeah it does. It always goes away after 2-3 min. It just used to go away in about 30-60 seconds or so.

Mine goes away after a couple seconds. I know it just needs oil to get to everything and then it stops. What i can't figure out is why it does it on a warm start when oil is already sitting up there. The truck runs fine so I'm not super worried about it, but I want to avoid a future problem if I can.

If I run 5w-30 in my 88, it ticks every start for about 5-10 seconds; 10w-40, about 5 seconds; 20w-50, never ticks.

I've heard, but not experienced, that some oil filters have an anti-drainback valve in them and some don't. If the filter doesn't, it'll allow oil to flow back through the pump into the pan.

My 91 has a ticking at warm starts, but not cold, that I've tracked down to the PAIR injection system. It goes away in a few minutes so I haven't worried much about it.

I always use the anti-drainback oil filters. I just think it's a good idea to keep oil up there for the next time. Have you noticed a difference with performance in cold v. warm weather with heavier and lighter weight oils? I haven't had my 89 pickup for a year yet so I'm trying to find a good combination for year-round.

You could have a worn rocker assembly. My number 4 intake valve ticks like hell no matter what.

A couple years' ago I was in Washington and Idaho in sub freezing, but above 0F and didn't notice anything out of the ordinary with 20w-50. Power seemed normal and all, but I did let it idle 5 or so before taking off.

Good point. That could be a little quieter on cold starts than on warm starts.

Cowboy, look above the names on the left side of the page. The yellow writing is the date and time of each post so you know how old they are. Also, I don't know if that's an engine problem or not. I don't see how pushing the clutch in can make the engine tick. How old is your clutch? I'm wondering if there's something going on with your pressure plate.

Hilux, I would say a valve adjustment is your first step and you can get a good look see at everything while your in there.
