The infamous 22re ticking question
I know its normal for the 22re to have a ticking noise at start up. However, I have noticed mine is lasting a little longer than normal. In the past it would tick until the engine warmed up then it was gone. Now it goes away after a certain about of time (2-3 minutes) rather than the engine being warm. Is this just the first sign that the valves need to be adjusted? THX

Valves have not been adjusted in about 30-40K. I should not have any problems with my timing chain at all. I have a LCE double chain on mine and it only has about 30K on it. I have never heard of double chain failing.

Not saying your chain is the Issue I know on mine when I cold start lots of ticking and slapping goes on until everything gets its oil, but I have 200grand on my motor so I have heard this is normal. I would imagine after 30k a valve adjustment wouldn't hurt.

Mine goes away after a couple seconds. I know it just needs oil to get to everything and then it stops. What i can't figure out is why it does it on a warm start when oil is already sitting up there. The truck runs fine so I'm not super worried about it, but I want to avoid a future problem if I can.

If I run 5w-30 in my 88, it ticks every start for about 5-10 seconds; 10w-40, about 5 seconds; 20w-50, never ticks.
I've heard, but not experienced, that some oil filters have an anti-drainback valve in them and some don't. If the filter doesn't, it'll allow oil to flow back through the pump into the pan.
My 91 has a ticking at warm starts, but not cold, that I've tracked down to the PAIR injection system. It goes away in a few minutes so I haven't worried much about it.

I always use the anti-drainback oil filters. I just think it's a good idea to keep oil up there for the next time. Have you noticed a difference with performance in cold v. warm weather with heavier and lighter weight oils? I haven't had my 89 pickup for a year yet so I'm trying to find a good combination for year-round.

Cowboy, look above the names on the left side of the page. The yellow writing is the date and time of each post so you know how old they are. Also, I don't know if that's an engine problem or not. I don't see how pushing the clutch in can make the engine tick. How old is your clutch? I'm wondering if there's something going on with your pressure plate.
