Auto-off headlamps <3rd Gen>
I am curious to know if there is a way I can turn my headlamp "wand' to "on' and after shutting down the truck have it shut off? . . . get in, turn it on and headlamps come on? Seems like it would be doable.

The headlights on my '01 4Runner come on when I turn the engine on. When the engine is off, headlights are off as well. My headlights switch is on the turn signal stalk if that makes a difference. I have DRLs though...
By the way, I have an extra headlights/turn signal switch from 2001 4Runner SR5, so if anyone is interested, let me know!

My '97 has running lights. There is a DRL relay under the dash and a resistor pack next to the battery. I unplugged mine to disable the DRLs. I think the wiring is quite a bit different because in DRL mode the light get their power through the resistor pack (metal block with cooling fins). When I turn on the lights with the switch, the resistor pack gets bypassed so the light are brighter. This is done by relays under the hood.
I guess you could figure out which relay is the headlight relay and run a relay parallel to that which is turned on by the ignition (engine runs, lights are energized.) If you add the resistor pack you end up with basic DRLs.
If you're interested and this sounds confusing I could draw up a basic schematic, but I would have to look into the wiring a bit more.
Hope I confused the heck out of you

yea i have drl's too of course. thing i like most about the set up is that if i park, and turn the engine off, the lights stay on until i open my door to get out.
i dont know why, thats just awesome to me

I see now what you would like. It's not impossible but an easier way would be to use this:
http://oeiwcs.omron.com/webapp/comme...6&prrfnbr=3988
Mount that under the hood set the delay time and wire it into the headlight relay as a "off-delay" timer. If you order one from an electrical supplier make sure to get the matching base.
I personnally use the analog dial version quite often, but I noticed that they don't have a 12vdc version.

Another option would be to add DEI lights modele, part #545T. This module works only with DEI alarms, but in many cases adding DEI alarm plus DEI lights still will be cheaper than getting DRL module from Toyota.

I have/had DRLs that I disconnected. My auto on off still works, however.
As in, if I leave my lights on and turn the truck off they go off also. When I turn it back on, they come back on.

My 2000 SR5 Sport turns the headlights off automatically when I turn the ignition off. A nice feature I just discovered the other day. Of course, my truck is about 3 features short of being a Limited.
