90 4Runner 22re Knock

Hi, I was just wondering what to do. I have a semi serious knock. I have been through 2 Cam shafts (was getting loud valve chatter and the lobes on my cam have been being worn down) Just replaced the CAM with a Trokr from engnbldr. The Problem now is I have a serious knock in small block. We replaced the CS bearings years back so I suspect it's the Rod Bearings going out. I am going to pick some up today and was wondering if I should replace the thrust washers at the same time. I plan on tearing her down today or tomorrow and will update with pics along the way.

Thanks for any advice from you veterans.

I would plan on replacing the thrust washers along with main bearings and getting the crank turned, otherwise you are most likely just wasting time and money as damage has already been done to the crank.

i just went through this so can give you some good advice.

first, don't skip anything. if you're going to take the engine out might as well do what you can while you can. don't ask me how i know

this is what i would do if you are pulling the engine to solve a knock:
- hot tank block
- new freeze plugs
- rebore block and fine hone
- deck block and timing cover
- get rods check at machine shop
- new pistons and moly rings
- have machine shop hang the pistons
- get crank checked and polished, grind if necessary, and have them give you new bearings
- new thrust washers
- check your pilot bearing
- check your rear main seal (use OEM)
- new water and oil pump
- get your head and valves checked
- OEM gasket kit

might be a lot but it sucks when you pull everything apart and miss something. i just rebuilt/restored an engine but skimped on getting new pistons...now i have piston slap.

And never trust your machinist, use plastigage after the machine work is done. Don't ask me how I know.

How much did all of that machine-shop work set you back?

I really like my truck and would do a lot to keep it in good shape, but 904runner22re is already 22 years old. How do you know when it's time to just let it go?

If you do what Modot said and go through the rest of the motor and keep the oil changed and the RPMs off the red line, you should be good for atleast another 2 or 300K miles
Old Toyotas never die, they just rust
