87 4runner uhaul tow hitch fitment issues

So after searching around a bunch I can't seem to find the answer Im looking for. I have 2 different uhaul tow hitches 1 off a 87 pickup and 1 off a 91 4runner. The 91 4runner hitch looks like it has the right brackets but for some reason both sides don't fit on the inside of the frame.... Am I missing something here? Any help is much appreciated!

Every hitch that I have seen doesn't fit onto the inside of the frame, they bolt to the outside. Normally get sandwiched between the the frame and bumper. But since the 4runner doesn't really have a frame mounted bumper......

On the outside of the frame there are body mounts welded on both sides that would block it from fitting. there were old mounts where someone had one mounted, looks like they just cut it off with a torch. Both were mounted on the inside of the frame. When I pulled the hitch off the 87 pickup it was also mounted on the inside of the frame but its mounting brackets are longer. Im stumped, wish I had a welder.

Ok, so still having an issue. This is getting frustrating and ridiculous it should be simple bolt on! Anyway, the hitch off the 87 pick up is closer to fitting then the 1 off the 91 4runner. There is no way for the hitch to mount on the outside of the frame rails without removing the body mounts, it says everywhere online that both of these hitches should fit but neither will go on the inside. I'm stumped other then modifying one of them, anyone have any input?

If these receiver hitches bolt together you need to take them all apart . all together there is no way you will get it in there as you seem to have found out as well as me

This way you can get the bolts in the frame then put the bolts in the cross piece.

Don`t tighten anything till all the bolts are in.

then just work your way around pull them up snug then go around and finish to about the proper torque for the size bolt and grade.

Funny how even when new this is not in the directions

I fought just like you a long time ago.

I have not installed a store bought hitch in years.:jessica: Just as cheap to build my own.

I can't believe I never thought of that lol thank you! I'll have to try that this week. I wish I had the tools to build my own I'm just now starting to collect metal working tools. Gotta also learn to weld along the way

My frame width is about 43" wide inside to inside. The hitch off the 91 is the one they all show when i look them up for my 87.
