coil over front suspension on 2nd gen.?

i was wondering if it would be possible to put a coilove type suspension(like the taco's and 3rd gen. runners have) on a 2nd gen 4runner? i would think that you could get probably better travel, ride height adjustment and travel out of this type of suspension?
Thanks

Travel is going to be dependent on your cv angles, assuming you've already done all the standard modifications to increase travel. In order to prevent bad angles at the travel limits, you need to lengthen your A-arms and your CV axle shaft. I believe somebody has or had a long travel kit like this, but I don't know much about it.

As far as ride height adjustment, cranking your tbars does exactly the same thing as spacers or adjuster nuts on a coilover.

A locker is going to help you out waaay more than better travel.

Yeah, but wouldn't the coils be a little better than torsion for ride quality...?

(A locker will get you into a lotta trouble too...)

That's one thing I'm not sure about since it's subjective. But that wasn't part of his criteria, he said, travel, ride height adjustment, and travel.

your biggest thing to do is to beef up the lower control arms and the mouns.

right now, the upper arm is where the t-bar bar mounts to, and where the most stress is.

the lower arms can be removed and the vehicle can stand there, albeit it may fall due to the spindle has no lower support.

so thats what you have to do...

Thanks

If you want more travel:

I have not seem any kits go from tbars to coilovers. You could find someone to make you some coil buckets.

what about using this kit, http://www.chaosfab.com/products/toy4wd/toy4wdcaddy.htm and then making shock hoops out of DOM tubing and having an over the engine tie-in bar to further more brace the hoops then bolt some coilovers to the lower control arms and shock hoop? would that work?

With the total chaos kit you can't run coilovers. There is not enough room for the axle shaft and the coilover. The shaft with hit the coils.

you are right! dangit. how do the 3rd gen runner and taco guys have a coilover front suspension and clear the cv's?
EDIT: but wouldnt the shock hit the CV too on the total chaos kit? i didnt think coilovers are to much larger in diameter that regular shocks and i would like to munt the coilovers in the same position as total chaos had them. keep the thoughts coming!
Thanks

so pretty much what i want to do is use this type of mounting, http://www.chaosfab.com/products/tacoma/tacoma.htm on a long travel lower control arm for my rig. and use the upper mounting idea that i had in one of the posts above. what do you think?
Thanks

What are your goals for this truck? High speed prerunning type stuff or normal slow off roading? I'm trying to figure out why you need more travel, different rear control arms, and ome 3rd gen springs.

I would like to do some prerunning along with some rocks and trails. the reason i was looking at the OME 860 LC coils is because i am looking for a coil that will give about 5" of lift but are cheaper than allpros 5" coils. the reason i was wondering about the links is because i have read that at about 4" or more of lift it is a good idea to get longer rear links to help correct pinion angles and help locate the axle where it was stock. and the reason for wondering about the coilovers in front is because if i was to lift the rear i should lift the front too right that and coilovers on the front would be schaweet
Thanks

Well the 3rd gens come stock with coilovers, so the clearance is already there.

Here is w/o the coil

And with the lower coil

Ok, I see.

I might have missed it, but does the total chaos kit say how much lift you get out of it? If you want to lift the front and back 5inches or more, then you're probably going to have to lower the diff to keep the cv happy. Most likely, you'll have to either somehow combine the TC long travel kit with an off the shelf lift, or fab you're own diff drop brackets.

Also, to adapt coilovers to the TC lower a-arms, you might have to reinforce the a-arms since they are not designed to take the bending load that the spring will place on them. Since the a-arms are 4130 chromoly, most likely, you can't just weld them yourself...it takes skill to weld 4130 correctly, plus you might need to heat treat them afterwards. There are a lot of "mights" and "if" and they can all probably be answered by the TC guys though.
